    Default E8400 maximum voltage by Intel

    Hey again Tweaktown peeps!

    I have the GA-EP45-UD3R, sitting on that is a E8400 @ 4005MHz, 1.356vcore-1.3VTT. My issue comes after reading Intel's Data sheet on max voltage for the E7xxx & E8xxx series CPU's. Intel states that the max voltage for the E8400 is 1.365. While doing an IBT test, my core temps get to 70c on 1.356, but passes 10 stresses while on water. What I'm wondering is, will it kill my chip to go over 1.365vcore to achieve a 450MHz/FSB? The only issue I have with that is testing. I know if I bump my vcore up anymore it's going to spike into the mid 70c's or higher and I don't need to be causing un-needed stress to my CPU.

    So really, my question is, "is it safe to go over Intel's max volt recommendation", and if so, how can it be tested without going over 72c or frying my chip? Does anyone have a base idea of what the voltage should be for 450*9? In CPUID my vcore reads 1.328(10 passes on IBT stable). Is Intel referring to voltages shown on CPUID or via BIOS? Right now in BIOS my Vcore is 1.3562, but CPUID states 1.328. Which one of these voltage readings should I be paying attention to?

    The required voltage varies depending on how good your chips ist and what VID it has.

    Going higher on the Vcore won't hurt the chip, if you look around overclocking forums you'll see that many people do it and it's extremely rare for a CPU to die. Your motherboard is probably around 100x more likely to die than your CPU when overclocking, even though it's designed for voerclocking while your CPU is not.

    Your temps are really bad though for watercooling. You should check your water temp and maybe get a different radiator, those temps are worse than I'd expect a good air cooler to achieve. Maybe your CPU cooler also isn't properly seated on your CPU, try re-installing it.

    When I was using my XIGMATEK HDT-S963 sink and fan and would try to use IBT at 450*9~1.35vcore, my core temps(Realtemp default TJmax 100) would instantly shoot to 78c - 80c. Dude, that's hot!! Now I'll only hit 70-71c while using IBT @ 450*9~1.3687vcore, MCH 1.28v. That's a huge improvement!

    On the side of water temps. I believe my pump maybe adding some heat to the liquid. It's a bit warm to the touch and I bought it before I read about 'canned motors'... Not very good at keep down heat production! So I'll be replacing that in the future with the 'Laing - DDC-12V REV3.2 18W', which does not produce much heat at all. This will drop those temps considerably!
    The other thing right now is it is summer and my room is not A/C'ed. I don't run the PC much when it gets hot in here, but my room can get up into the 90's, which I have run it in. It's a bit humid in here right now!
    The other issue is a rad that is 170mm x 176mm that only has one 140mm pulling air through. So it does not provide ample cooling for the rad. On that note. I just purchased 4 80mm fans that will be fit to pull while the 140mm will push through a gutted 140mm fan case. This too will drop the rad temp considerably. The electro-thermometer I attached to my rads brass outlet tube is reading my room temp of 74f. Yeah, it's warm in here right now! So getting more air moving through the rad will be a definite plus.

    My temps are high cause it's summer and I have an unusually high room temp, which is going to cause higher PC temp readings. It's alright though, cause I <3's the heat! I expect when the night comes, my core temps will be down around 36c - 37c as usual! Getting those other parts, pump and fans, will get my temps down to around 28c - 30c. So my biggest issue right now is my pump & lack of fans!

    I would be more worried about those temps bud. You should Remove your cooler and reapply TIM and make sure its seated properly. A little more voltage wont hurt your chip much. But those temps will shorten its life a lot I would imagine.

    You guys are aware that those temps are with 'Intel Burn Test' at 99.9% system load[in sig], 1.75Gb mem, right? With IBT, 10 passes with that much memory usage takes about ten or so minutes[never timed it]. In real world usage, I'll never hit 99.9% system usage at 1.75Gb. IBT also runs hotter than most testing software and tends to find what Orthos and OCCT miss.
    I let Prime95 run for 10 hours with temps 58c to 62c. Intel says-but not a direct quote-, prolonged usage of 65c and above will speed up the degradation of the chip, were anything around or above 72c could destory your chip if unchecked for to long. Right now I'm Idling at 39c to 41c, gaming with GTA4 gets up to 58c after playing multiplayer for a couple of hours on a hot day. That's only 136f. I was told that is optimal for this chip!?!? I do agree though, with water my temps should be lower, but that's an issue having to do with lack of cooling to my rad!

    Here's a pic of the temporary mounting solution[lol]. Designing a shroud for it at some point.
