98c after a couple minutes, YES i would worry . Do a reseat of your heatsink. What type of Thermal paste/grease are you using?

wow - thanks for the fast response.

I did reseat the cooler and took some of the paste off
because I did not like the temps I was getting when
I did some more conservative (3.5GHz) overclocking.
That did help the temps significantly. The paste is
just standard heat sink compound (the tube says
29 type silicone) that I have used in the past for
other semiconductor uses. Do you think the kind of
paste can make a big difference? When I looked into
some other coolers I saw that the newer version
of the Scythe uses a plate under the MB rather than
the push-in clips like I have now (like the stock cooler).
Not sure if that would make a difference.

Also, my case fan is pretty small although taking the
side off the case didn't make much difference in the
    temps.

are u using the latest bios?that might help with your ram, also why not drop to 3.8ghz with 1.18750cpu voltage(click normal)in bios, enable c1e enable everything just set qpi voltage to 1.28000 and ram to 1.66 and cpu voltage to normal set bclk to 180x20 youl run alot cooler at idle and full load

Yes, I am using the latest BIOS. I know I could get the temp down by not overclocking as much but in the Gigabyte tutorial, which I used to get
all the settings for 4GHz, said they got 53C under full load and 33C
when idle. These numbers seem really low to me.

I am just wondering if my cooler is not doing the job it should
or there is something wrong with the mounting or it is not
a good cooler for the Core I7. The Gigabyte tutorial used
    a Thermalright Extreme 120.

Under normal use, I see my temp max at 70C and Real Temp
says TJ Max is 98C. That does not seem too bad to me but maybe
I am doing damage even operating in the 50-70 range which I
    am getting.

id take there quoted temps with a pinch of salt, they seem more like watercooled temps to me,try to keep temps below 75c if u set it up with those settings i gave you you should be good on temps, the higher the voltages the higher the temps maybe you could try a better cooler one thats designed for i7 and not a 775 socket add on for 1366

Try to make your Vcore lower then start putting your bclk up high my Vcore is 1.2V and that gave me a lower temp to start from.

And maybe read this one this was my problem allmost the same as you have.

My ram was running at 1520mhz Bclk 190x21 maybe it helps :-)

    @stubrown.
U should lower ur vcore. My 920 d0 could run 3.990 daily. With vcore 1.325 (bios) - 1.296 (windows). With ifx 14 it runs 75c after 2 hour of prime95. N 38c on idle..

U should reseat ur cooler i guess.

Switch up that thermal grease- Go with the Trusty Arctic Silver 5, or you can try out some of the newer fancier ones... Just google thermal paste / grease reviews and u should find ALOT . But i would not use "type 29" silicone...

Any yes consider a hardcore heatsink like the Mega's , Noctua , IFX-14 , or any other highly reviewed HSF.

You also say your case fan is small... So im guessing u only have 1 ? If so add MORE. What kinda case you using?

Thanks for all the responses. My first goal is to get the temp
down but keep the oc at 4GHz. Went to Best Buy (the only place
left to get computer parts around here) and bough some Dynex thermal
grease and a Corsair H50 cooler, which is a sealed liquid cooler system.
First I tried my Scythe with the better grease and that did make an
improvement in temp, both idle and full load. But the temps under
full load (Prime95 large FFT) still got over 90 on Real Temp.

I installed the H50, which required swapping cases with my
wife since mine was too small for the 120mm fan. I added
a 120mm case fan blowing out of the case in the front because
the H50 requires that air flows into the case and over the radiator
of their cooing system. I used whatever grease that was pre-applied
    to the H50.

So now my idle temps are in the low 40s and running Prime95
for 10 minutes got the temps as high as 86 on one core. That's
better than the 90s I got with the Sycthe. I might also try
moving the front case fan to the side panel or just adding
    another fan to the panel.

Now I am going to look through some of your replies to
see if I can get the memory running closer to 1600
and keep the CPU at 4GHz.
