    Default GA-EX58-UD5 Windows restart freezes

    Hi
I've built the computer this weekend with the GA-EX58-UD5 and i7 920 step D0, and I had no problems for the mobo to detect the processor. It came with F7 BIOS preloaded; first of all I've upgraded to F8f BIOS, and then installed MSDN Windows 7. All seems to work fine, but I have only one problem. When I turn on the computer Windows 7 loads ok, but if I do a restart, it allways freezes just when Windows starts loading (black screen with text "Starting Windows", freezes before showing the coloured motion logo). I need to press Reset button and then Windows loads well.
May it be a BIOS problem that prevents Windows detect hardware after a soft reset, needing a hard reset?

The first thing I would do is check for defective memory. Run the WIndows memory Diagnosis off the Win 7 DVD (should be on there, haven't checked myself but it's on the Vista DVD).
This is probably hardware related (i.e. not driver related) since there's a difference between a cold boot and a reboot.

Yes, please give us your full specs and settings, then we can better advise.

Do you see any RED Warnings when you go into the MIT Section of the BIOS? Have you already set your QPI/Ram voltages yourself, if not this may be part of the issue we will better know once you give us your info.

Yeah definently check your settings, I'm running the same Windows 7 RTM from msdn and everything works wonderful on my ud4p. Retested my OC for stability and it is still just as stable as it was under Vista x64.

    First, thanks for the replies
I've found the cause for the problem: an USB external HD. If I disconnect it, Windows restarts ok every time. Once in Windows, plug the drive and works well. This can be a problem for Windows detecting this drive at startup.

These are my BIOS settings. When I upgraded the BIOS to F8f I loaded default settings, and only changed SATA controllers to ACHI.

    The memory installed is 12 Gb (6 * 2 Gb Kingston 1066 KVR1066D3N7K3) PC3-8500 CL7.

Its not uncommon for this to occur and does vary between different usb external drive chip types. What you can try is turning off Legacy storage support. you may find that you can then leave the drive attatched without the restart freeze, then again you may not.

Yes, please try disabling Legacy USB Storage Detect (Legacy USB Function in X58) in the Integrated Peripherals Section of the BIOS. This will only stop devices from working in DOS, they will work normally in windows.

You will need to re-enable this setting though next time you want to Qflash if you use a USB Stick for that.

    Thanks
