    Default P35-DS4 and 8GB DDR2-1066

Hi, I'm new here, had a bit of a search but couldn't find anyone with quite the same specs as me with similar issues. I'm trying to upgrade my system from 4GB (2x2GB) of G.Skill DDR2 1066MHz (PI Series) RAM, to 8GB (4x2GB) of the same. When I put the RAM in, I ran the windows memory diagnostic in Win7 straight away and it got errors towards the end of the first pass. I've tried playing around with voltages a little, but still getting errors. I have yet to try it in actual use, but I did have some different 1066MHz DDR2 that I tried and was getting blue screens, continuous restarts etc with that (I thought faulty RAM, so returned it - twice - before going for something identical to what I had that worked at 4GB).

My specs are: Gigabyte P35-DS4 (Rev 1.0, F14 Bios)
    E6700 CPU
    4x2GB G.Skill DDR2 1066MHz (PI Series) RAM
    500GB WD SATA HDD
    SATA LG Dual-Layer burner
    8800 Ultra gfx

I had a bit of a play around with voltages, but not really knowing what I was doing, didn't want to do too much there, so I set it back to defaults. Am currently testing the RAM at 800MHz, and so far it looks stable according to the Windows Memory Diagnostic. I've also tested each pair of sticks individually with no errors after multiple passes.

Any suggestions or links to relevant threads would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks!

    - Chris

Please fill out a BIOS tempalte with the unstable settings:
    http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/giga...ettings-33613/

For 8GB at 1066 you will need to increase DRAM Voltage to the RAM's specified value and maybe increase MCH voltage by 0.1-0.2V. Some people have reported that decreasing the MCH voltage by 0.05V actually helped them get the system stable (this points to the NB becoming to hot at stock voltage).

Wow - cheers for the quick response. My specs/bios template are below.

Also, I ran the memory at 800MHz testing overnight and got no errors.

Edit: I couldn't find a few of the options in the bios mentioned in the template, so I removed those lines below. Any other info you need, let me know.

Struggling with DDR-1066 at 266FSB doen't worth the headach. Have a look at the second picture in this post.
DDR-800 with tighter timings if they are easier to achive, is just as good. The 2.0-2.1v DRAM voltage will still be needed though.

Ya 8GB at 1066 is harder then you want to spend time with since you are running everything at stock. I'd suggest using 444-12 and run 800-900

If you would like suggested settings to try though for 1066 let me know and I will post you some

Useful points both, thanks. I'd like to try and get it running at 1066 if possible, but if that doesn't work, then I can try the 800-900 option.

With running the tighter timings at 800, does it matter that the RAM is specced at 5-5-5-15, and ~2.0-2.1v already? Or will it be more likely to tolerate tighter timings than spec when running at 800 instead of 1066?

    Thanks!

At 800 - 900MHz memory speeds, you can probably use 4-4-4-12 primary memory timings for performance that will be virtually the same as 5-5-5-15 @ 1066 speeds.
    Don't worry, be happy :)

    +1 ^^^^

Try this for 1066, if you continue to have nothing but issue back off the memory multi until someone can advise you of something else to try before going to 800-900

Robust Graphics Booster___________ [Auto] or Fast
    CPU Clock Ratio ____________ [10X]
    CPU Host Clock Control_ [Disabled]
    CPU Host Frequency (MHz)__________ [266]

System Memory Multiplier (SPD)____ [3.00] << Set 4.00A (Also try 4.00B)
DRAM Timing Selectable_______ SPD __ [Auto] << Manual

    Performance Enhance = [Standard]

    CAS Latency Time________________ 5
    Dram RAS# to CAS# Delay_________ 5
    Dram RAS# Precharge Delay_______ 5
    Precharge Delay (tRAS)__________ 18

ACT to ACT Delay (tRRD)_________ 3-5 (May need to use 4, but try 3 first)
Rank Write to READ Delay________ 4-8
    Write to Precharge Delay_________ 6-10
Refresh to ACT Delay______________ 64-88 (Set 82 for now)
    Read to Precharge Delay__________ 3-5
Static tRead Value_______________ 7/8-10 << Set 9 for now
    Static tRead Phase Adjust________ [Auto]

    System Voltage Control____ [Auto]
    DDR2 OverVoltage Control__ [Normal] << Set +0.3-0.35 (=2.1-2.15V)
PCI-E OverVoltage Control_ [Normal] << Set Auto (Don't use Normal on anything, Auto or Set it)
FSB OverVoltage Control___ [Normal] << Set +0.1 for stability
(G)MCH OverVoltage Control [Normal] << Set +0.2-0.35 (Start with maybe .25)
    CPU Voltage Control_______ [Normal]

Limit CPUID Max. to 3.....................: [Disabled]
    No-Execute Memory Protect............: [Enabled]
CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)................: [Enabled] << Disable

Post back if you need more help, and so you know you may have much better luck trying to get them going at 1066 with 333 FSB, but that is a whole new issue for you so I wont advise on that until you ask.

Thanks for that - I'll experiment with those settings and leave it running tests overnight to see how it fares, will post back tomorrow. With the PCI-E Overvoltage control (and most of the ones in that section), there is no "Auto" option. It's all +something. So I've left the ones not mentioned on Normal for now...

Going to 333 FSB will be overclocking a few things more wont it? How will that impact on cooling/other stability of the system? I really don't know anything about tweaking the motherboard settings obviously :)

    Thanks!

    With 333 x 10 = 3.33GHz, you'll have a 25% overclock. Cpu Voltage Control might need to be increased 1 click.
333 x 3.0 = 1000MHz memory speeds, which might work with 8GB. If not, 333 x 2.40 will run your memory at 800MHz, where 4-4-4-12 timings should be fine.
If you have any boot or stability issues, set Legacy USB Storage Detect = Disabled.

If your system is stable, try setting tRD (Static tRead Value) down by 1 for better memory performance. Lower values = increased performance. My P35-DS3L is stable using tRD = 5 with 350 x 8.0 = 2.80GHz.

Are you familiar with running extended stability tests with Prime95, OCCT, or Orthos?
