Agreed. The G.Skill will probably do 1200 with a little tweaking too. I'd still replace the cooler, go for a set of G.Skill DDR-1066 PK series (Blue-Green/Aqua heat-spreaders) and try for 4GHz with 1066-1100 on the RAM. To get to 1100 is only a 17MHz overclock.

You guys are the freaking bomb. Thanks for the advice!! I have a pal who works for Mushkin and he talked me into looking at the Redline series by them. He gave me some solid advice and so when I checked on newegg and they were $75 per 4g set with a 10 dollar rebate I went ahead and ordered 8 gigs. I don't have any intrest in synthec benchmarks, only real world applications when it comes to my own money!! I guess these chips have 5-5-5-12 timing! So I'm really excited. I should get them on Friday or Monday and I'll le you all know how it goes. :)

Nimrod: dude, this is a perfect opportunity! I can help you out and you can help me out. The only thing I'm worried about is my cooler. It's not that great as psyco pointed out, can it handle the OC that you'd like me to try? Otherwise I'm very wiling to test your settings on my board and report back. Thanks man!!

FWIW he said the lead engineer there really liked the Patriot Viper series and everything that G.Skill was making. He also said that I should quit buying OCZ. They are having a lot of financial trouble apparently, and high RMA rates. Again, I'm just passing on the info that I gained from him.

Take it easy dudes, thanks for the awesome feedback!

I was going to second the G'Skill sentament as my 2.1v G'skill is cooler then 1.8v Corsair. Probably doesn't mean a thing but I just like the pretty blue.

For sure your cooler will be fine for the mild overclock settings I mentioned. even if you try 8X400fsb=3.2ghz that is a good place to start but should be fine to try for 8.5X400=3.4ghz. Just get something like Real Temp to monitor your temps. Infact when I crank mine to 3.4 and run prime 95 it dones get very much hotter, maybe a few Degrees then running it at like 3ghz. It doenst last very long though it usually fails a test in prime after average of 4 minutes at those speeds. So yeah be interesting if if may just be an chipset compatability issue or what ive suspected all along in that my Q9550 is a lemon.

I'll give that OC a shot when I get back home tonight or tomorrow. I should be getting my RAM today, I hope. Newegg always seems to take a day longer than they say in my area. So I'll be installing that RAM, Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit and tweaking my board over the weekend! SWEET!

    Redline Memory - XP2-8000 DDR2 - Mushkin Enhanced

This is what I'm getting. It should be pretty amazing.

I'll keep you all updated. If there is anything else I should do besides change my multiplier and FSB freq. please let me know!! Remember, I'm a total OC noob.

Meh. Newegg is slow shipping to Indiana. I'll report back as soon as I get my RAM. also, Psycho you'll be happy to know I upgraded the cooler :) thanks for your input.

Okay, prime95 has been running for 50 mins. No temp higher than 52C at 3.2Ghz. That's 400X8. sweet! I have the RAM, but I don't have it installed yet. I'm doing the Blend tests too. Soooo....that's good right?

Hey All, Ok NimrodAUS, here is what I got so far. My computer is running FINE @ 3.4GHz, it worked okay with XP on prime95 for 50mins. BUT, not so with Win 7. I get this error:

It starts with Core 4 and works it's way up. The 8 Gigs of ram are really great. I've got them at 1066 5-5-5-12 with no issues so far, but I haven't ran memtest on them yet either. So yeah, I don't know how to fix this issue or what it means. I'm going to do a quick google search to see what this could be pointing too. I hope this comparison helps determine if you have a lemon or not!! Thanks, Sam

I'd say it indicates the ram is not working properly at your current settings for win7. You might want to try 5-5-5-15 with subtimings on auto. Then use memset to see what is set. The auto figures will be conservative, and may be scaled back one at a time until instability arises. Then go back to last settings that passes prime.

You can test settings in memset, but what passes in windows with memset might not when set in bios. Hopefully NimrodAUS will spot this, because he would know more about OCing yr processor.

Eight GB of ram is a big load for the NB/MCH and may limit overclocking. Even 4GB. Highest overclocks easier with 2GB ram.

It may not be possible to get 8GB of ram to work at the same settings as recommended for 4GB or 2GB. Timings most likely need to be looser than that.

okay, I went back in and changed strapping to auto. It changed my mem freq from 1066 @ 2.66D to 960 @ Auto. I kept the timings to 5-5-5-12 because that is what the RAM's advertised specs are.

I shouldn't have done this at the same time, but I also changed my OC from 8.5 to 8x400fsb. So I'm now running at 3.2Ghz. Next time I boot up I'll try it at 3.4 and see if I'm stable. I know this counts for nothing, but I've gotten through 5 tests on prime95. It's lasting a hell of lot longer than it was though. OH, I also changed my HTEP in power management from 32 bit to 64 bit. That did help a little bit before.

Also, this Zalman cooler kicks ass! I upgraded from the AC freezer Pro 7, and it's about 6 degrees cooler. Snootch to the bootch!

This should be the last edit on this topic for me, unless someone else needs anything.

I've got the system running stable at 3.4Ghz, max temp reached so far has only been 52C, RAM is at 960MHz @ 5-5-5-12. Ran prime95 last night for 2 hours while multitasking (even gaming with little lag) and never got higher than 52C. Holy **** I'm happy :) Thanks all for the help, I truly appreciate it. Also, if anyone wants a setting/has a suggestion I'm all ears. Thanks a lot!!
