You just need to stress test for a decent amount of time now to confirm stability. 8 hours should be fine (over night) but 12 would be better. You definitely can't call a system stable after only a couple of hours. Even 5-6 hour stability might fall over when gaming/encoding etc, even simply when unzipping a large collection of files. Better to put a bit of time in to test now than be surprised later if you find you're getting random crashes in any current or future software you may use.

Thanks for the heads up Psycho, I'm running prime95 now. Started at 9am. I'll get home from work at 8:30 so I should know if I'm stable or not!

Thanks for the education, again! :)

    Okay,

Ran Prime95 from 2am last night until approx 7 pm tonight. So that was good! BUT, yesterday I came home to a log in screen after 9 hours at work. I don't have any idea how to check and see what happened. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Then I presume the system must have restarted. Unless there was a power cut or something, that tells me there are stability issues.

I was looking at the event viewer today hoping for some clue as to why it would crash. I mean, what other tests should I run to single out where my instability lies? It also is puzzling that it would crash once and not again. According to the event viewer, the system had an error on 10-1 at approx 12pm, so I started running it at about 6 when I left for work (ish, it's been a couple days!). Should I try additional tests? If yes, which ones would you reccomend to stress the RAM specifically since I would suspect that is where the istability lies. Thanks a lot

Hmm Theres still something not right then. This is very helpful to myself as well as I never suspected that the ram could be whats holding my overclock back. I really should put the good old Corsair XMS2 800Mhz ram in and see how the Q9550 goes. Keep us posted mate on any progress. These Guys on here will get you sorted.

Narrowing down error cause in Prime95:

    Small FFT
This test uses data that fits completely into your CPU's level 2 cache, it stresses the processor intensely but does not stress the RAM or the link between the RAM and the processor. It will error out because of:
    Not enough vCore
    Possibly low CPU Termination (VTT)
    Possibly low/high CPU ref
Possibly low PLL (clock generator) voltage

    Large FFT
This test uses large "pieces" of data that require information to be moved in and out of RAM quite intensely to constantly feed the processor. The data in these calculations doesn't fit completely in CPU onboard cache, so the work load on the MCH and RAM is huge. It will error out because of:
    Not enough vDIMM (RAM voltage)
Not enough (and rarely too much) MCH core voltage
    Incorrect MCH ref voltage
Unstable memory timings (includes both main timings ie 5-5-5-15, and also tRead and tRFC.
Only fails because of processor when vCore is waaaaaay too low!

    Blend
This alternates between small and large data sets, and although it is a useful "last test" when run for say 24 hours after you believe you have everything dialed in and it passes Large and Small seperately, it's confusing for fault finding.
If Blend fails it could be for any reason mentioned for small FFT and large FFT leaving you with no indication what to do to stablise the system.
I believe Psycho101 originally posted the above, and profJim recommended this link.

    FANTASTIC.

That is exactly what I needed to see again. Sorry to Psycho for not catching that info before. You guys are great. I'm going to start with the large FTT's b/c I'm almost certrain it's the RAM that is causing the issue. Thanks so much for the reminder and information. I just didn't absorb this info and store it for later I guess. Much appreciated all!!!!!

I'll post my results when done...whenever that will be...work is crazy for me :)

You didn't miss it - (Sorry to give wrong impression.) I read it in another post shortly before coming here, thought it might be useful, and copied it over. Sure hope it helps isolate the problem.

I know this topic is old but I didn't see anyone correct the above statement. The X48 PCIe slots ARE INDEED 2.0!
