I let memtest run for 12 passes. No errors.

I stil beleive it's worth trying to lower the clocks below standard and test. It won't take long and should help prove the card's stability.

If you want to bench the card rather than simply game and see what happens, use FurMark. Don't use the burn in option as it's rweally intense, just use the standard at 1280x1024 with post processing and 4xAA. that'll be plenty to stress the card in a similar way that Memtest stresses RAM and Prime stresses mobo/RAM/CPU.

Any problem with the card with regards to either drivers, board compatibility or actual hardware faults will be revealed in short time with FurMark. You may need to change the name of the .exe, as AMD have in the past deliberately throttled the card while running furmark by instructing drivers to not work as hard when the program is detected. This is because FurMark has revealed manufacturing issues with some cards that involved them failing.

Any source for this info? I find it very interesting, thanks!

For whats it worth My Sparkle 8800GT works without a problem in my ex dell Dimension 9150 PCI-e 1.0 and takes big craps when running in the X48-DS5 board with the same crap error your getting but just the nvidia version nvblablabla has crapped out and recovered crapplly. I tried fresh installs of XP, Vista and 7 same crap. Put it back in the dell and it never had a problem?? Who knows but if your memory is fine and after you talking about fresh installs then im affraid its sounding more like a card fault or possible some sorta compatabillity issue :-(

Sure mate, here you go: techPowerUp! News :: ATI Deliberately Retards Catalyst for FurMark

The advice at the time was to change furmark.exe to etqw.exe, which is the Enemy Territory, Quake Wars game. This is because it's OpenGL based, just like furmark.

The Furmark killing cards was almost conjecture on forums similar to "VTT kills". There were more cases of it though on various forums including someone on the overclcokers.co.uk forum who ended up with scorch marks around the VRM area of his volt modded (hardware, 10K Ohm potentiometer) 4850. Standard card deaths are rare, but have happened (if you can 100% believe everything posted that is).

The OCUK forum had an upgrade a while ago so both the scorched post and it's google cache have gone unfortunately. The heat produced (it was apparently cool in normal games with 1.35V on the GPU) was enough to let him litterally pull off a choke with his fingers. I think the melting point of solder , assuming 63/37 type is used is 183c, which is alot of heat indeed. The VRM's are rated to around 115c, but probably only in short bursts.

Which version of futuremark? When I installed 06 on here it messed something up and stopped my pc seeing that I had an internet connection. Sounds crazy but I did a system restore to just before I installed it and everything was back to normal.

From what you have said it makes me think that it is a compatibility issue. Kinda of a bad joke really. I buy a crossfire board so I can get another card to crossfire with in the future..but the board is not compatible with the ati graphics card I already have. Ever wonder why you bother?

Rebuilt my old system. Fortunately I left the HD with my windows installation on it alone. So for once this week I aint had to reinstall windows. Seems perfectly stable. So I will be calling up the retailer today to see about getting a refund on the mobo.

Going to flash the bios on this system later so I can use the E8400 and the ram. Wish me luck...lol

Thanks for all the help and ideas guys. Really appreciated it. Pity the first time I buy a Gigabyte board this happens. They have a great rep and that.. but I must admit I'm now a little put off. If ever I buy a Gigabyte board again though I will know where to come eh!

Thats no good budy. I dont know if im ready to lay all the blame on the board though. What are the specs of your old system?

What does it matter? If the card works stably in one system there's no reason why it shouldn't in another. And I could tolerate it no longer. I've spent 5 or 6 days doing nothing but formatting hd's, installing windows, wiping and installing drivers, swapping parts in and out to check each component and building and rebuilding my rig. Not to mention the hangs and crashes were just doing my head in.

But for the sake of argument here is my old system specs.

    OS: Windows XP Pro SP3
    Processor: Pentium 4 550 @ 3.4GHZ
    RAM: 1Gig XMS2 PC6400
    Motherboard: Asus P5B
    Graphics card: Sapphire HD4770
    PSU: Silverstone ELEMENT 500W

Edit: I don't think there was anything wrong with Gigabyte board it just had a computability issue. What else could it possibly be? I did try clocking my graphics card down like the other dude suggested btw and it made no difference. My pc was effectively an expensive paperweight.
