I have both the E8500 & Q9550 and I currently use the Quad for everything. The E8500 Is basically just collecting dust at the moment. I have the Q9550 @ 3.09Ghz at the moment because it doesnt seem to want to go any higher without further testing and mucking around. I Run the E8500 @ 3.8 and there is minimal difference between the performance of either in games that I can see. However in Video editing and multitasking the Q9550 is the clear winner. Its a tuff choice but if the prices are similar I would buy the Quad. Even if you got the Q9550 and maybe overclocking it a tiny bit. @ least you will have the 12mb Cache and your pretty much garrenteed to get a E0 stepping now. The Quads run a little hotter, and either way you go I would seriously look at getting a better then stock CPU cooler. As the Intell ones are noisy, have poor preformance and are stupid to fit.

On that note, either E8XXX or Q9550 up are going to see you through till the next new best thing as they are great chips and both capable of doing almost anything at the best performance possible.

I only said a little hotter. They are obviously your idle temps? Whats the load like on the intel cooler? Have you had a good aftermarked cooler? I cant hear mine at all. I like quiet. But maybe im just fussy.

Luckily, the stock quad core coolers are I believe copper cored compared to the generic aluminium block of the dual core coolers.

You should be ok for a slight "upgrade" over clock on the stock cooler, but for max efficiency and a good noise profile, an after market cooler would be a nice thing to have. Choose wisely and you'll be pleased.

Yes I can confirm that the Core 2 Quad Coolers have a copper base were as the Core 2 Duo's are aluminium. Of the 45nm Chips anyway.

My load temps are fine and I use a CM Hyper 212 cpu cooler with a push/pull configuration using the stock fan and a scythe s-flex "F" fan. My Q9550 is overclocked to 3.60ghz. My temps go up to only 40c when DVDRB PRO using cinema craft encoder. My Q9550 system is housed in a CM 590 case with many 120mm fans.

Encoding probably doesnt even use half of your cpu. I know when I do some especially with Nero (yes I know) it doesnt use more then 52% of any of the cores :-( which kinda sucks. Run Prime 95 and see what the temps are like. I was refering to the Stock intel Heatsink being not the best for overclocking and its noisy. It will handle a slight clock nudge but I wouldnt go extreme with it on stock coolers. Get the Noctua NH-U12P Id put those 12cm fans on everything if I could they are so quiet and they really move the air.

I'd actually suggest the 8400 really since you are not overclocking, it would save you some $$ and then you could get something else too. But yes the Quads are good as well, just not sure if they are that much better for gaming if left at stock speeds

Or just wait a while longer saving $$ and go ahead with a P55 update

Thanks for all the replies. You all talk about overclocking, all the time. I understand that it stresses the CPU and invalidates the warranty. I did once try to overclock using ‘Easy Tune 5’. I tried increasing it from 2660 to 3000. All that did was lock my computer up. I had to do a hard reset.

I think I’ll go for the Q9650. It’s the fastest CPU I can fit on my motherboard. I really don’t want to overclock and I’m not ready to upgrade my entire computer just yet. I’m hoping (with the help of a new 5000 series graphics card) to play all the latest game for a few years yet (perhaps another two years).

    Am I being too optimistic?
