Thread: Strange stuff goin' on..

    Default Strange stuff goin' on..

I installed a new SATA HD this weekend and noticed after I booted up & started initializing it that my system had changed both my hard drives to a SCSI configuration. I wanted to find out if this was normal or not. If not, do I need to switch which SATA ports the drives are connected on my board to get them off SCSI?

I'm also getting an intermittent system freeze, which wasn't happening before. The entire computer will seize up for about three seconds, and then resume normal operation. I don't know what the problem could be - any ideas?

    System specs:

    Gigabyte EP45-UD3P Board
    Intel C2D E8400 OC'd to 3.6gHz (400x9)
    2x2GB DDR2-1066 Memory
    Primary HDD - 250GB Seagate SATA-300 (on channel GSATA2_0)
Secondary HDD - 1TB WD Caviar Black SATA-300 (on GSATA2_1)
    Optical - Samsung SH-S223L (on SATA2_0)
    GPU - Sapphire Radeon 4870 512MB
    MB - Gigabyte EP45-UD3P
    CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 C0 @ 3.6gHz (400x9)

    GPU - Sapphire Radeon 4870 512MB

You should have your drives on the Intel Ports (Yellow) SATA2_0 and SATA2_1

You will need to set the BIOS settings for that, and possibly also move your hard drive with your OS back to the top of the Hard Disk Boot Priority Menu after moving your drives and setting and applying the settings.

You should use these settings >>

    Integrated Peripherals

    Intel Controller (Yellow Ports)
SATA RAID/AHCI Mode (Intel ICH10R Southbridge) ............. Disabled
SATA Port0-3 Native Mode ................................... Enabled (or Disabled, both will work)

Gigabyte/J.Micron Controller (Purple Ports) (you can disable these now if you have no IDE Ribbon cable devices and no other drives on the purple ports)
Onboard SATA/IDE Device (GIGABYTE SATA2 Chip) ............. Enabled
Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode (GIGABYTE SATA2 Chip) ........... IDE

If you are using AHCI you would need to reinstall your OS because the drivers are different for AHCI on the Gigabyte Vs Intel ports

Put your CD/DVD Drive on SATA2_4 or SATA2_5

That seems to have done the trick. Also noticed that SCSI seems a lot slower than SATA, especially on my boot time.

I didn't get a chance to see if the intermittent freeze issue had resolved itself but I'll check it tonight.

By SCSI do you really mean AHCI? SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) is a different technology. It's a different standard to SATA. Depending on what version of SCSI is used it can be much faster (at least in theory) than SATA. Also SCSI hard drives are commonly seen to spin faster by design, at anywhere from 10,000 RPM (same as a WD Raptor) up to 15,000 RPM and beyond.

If using SCSI on your board you'd know about it as it would require a seperate PCI/PCIe controller card.

AHCI is somewhat slower during boot up than having the SATA ports in IDE mode. In theory AHCI should give faster disk I/O (speed in Windows and apps) as it better supports NCQ (Native Command Queueing). NCQ IMO only really helps on I/O heavy systems where loads of small reads are common, such as a file server. Bechmarks I've done with AHCI vs IDE SATA have shown no difference other than the normal variation you get between tests.

I think what he meant was device manager sometimes shows drives connected to the Gigabyte/J.Micron ports as SCSI. Why, who knows?

That's exactly what it showed up as in Device Manager.

And yep the freezing problem has stopped since I switched everything to the yellow SATA plugs. Now I can get back to working on my OC..
