    Default EFI for Gigabyte motherboards??

    Hello,

Does anyone know if Gigabyte is working on an EFI flash for their motherboards?

I'd like to run Windows 2008 Server on a GPT disk and GPT is only support on a machine that uses EFI.

    Lets hope so.
Is EFI required for a GPT disk?
No. GPT disks are self-identifying. All the information needed to interpret the partitioning scheme of a GPT disk is completely contained in structures in specified locations on the physical media.

Thanks for the info. From the GPT FAQ, this is the one that I'd like to address:

    16. Can Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 read, write, and boot from GPT disks?
Yes, all versions can use GPT partitioned disks for data. Booting is only supported for EFI-based systems.

For now you may need to stick with the 64bit OS.

Sadly this doesn't even work. I tried Windows Server 2008 R2 (which only comes 64 bit BTW) and it won't install on a GPT disk.

I can create GPT data disks with it (you can do that with Vista too I believe), just can't boot off of a GPT disk.

EFI may or may not be included in the final P55 models, I do think I remember seeing some pre-production models showing a few methods of this in use but sadly I cannot find those previews anymore.

Have you asked them directly? If not I would go ahead and see if you can get a answer even if it is not a definite

I was under the impression that you could boot to GPT with Windows 2008. I must have misunderstood. So you got to use an MBR to boot. You can only read and write to the GPT with Windows 64bit? Not much help then.
