    Default X58 CAS4 from S3 issue a problem?

    I recently found out about the CAS4 bug for all x58 board when resuming from S3 sleep. Not matter what is saved in the bios for memory timings after resuming from S3 all programs like cpu-z everest and the like report the CAS timing to be 4. For instance a 8 8 8 21 timing that is saved and reported as such after boot is then reported as 4 8 8 21 after coming out of S3 sleep. I have been using S3 and hadn't noticed the issue until I read it on these forums but can confirm it is present at least with my ex58-ud4p and the f9c bios.

    I have heard some say it has caused instability but I have not noticed this for I do hours of gaming and video encoding even after resuming from S3 with this CAS being reported as 4. I have even tested this with an 2 hours of prime95 blend and multiple instances of memtest.exe at the same time so almost all 6gigs are being comsumed in some way and appears to be rock solid. Unfortunately there is not way to use memtest86+ at boot to test the mem stability since the problem only occurs after S3. Will do a little linx but I'm sure it will turn out the same.

    This stability even with the CAS being reported by 4 leads me to believe that this is just a reporting bug and that the cas is not truly set to 4 especially considering I have dropped my stock ram timings from 9 9 9 24 to 8 8 8 21 with 1.54v.

    I wonder if anyone that is using a bios where s3 seems to work properly but has the CAS4 problems are still stable like me.

    Yes, I have the exact same issue but my system is stable. I'd like to figure out how to show my system specs like you have. Is that free form or is it like fill in the blanks?
    I do see one difference though... My cpu temp is around between 39c-41c when idle when I reboot and get correct timings of 8-8-8-24 T1. When I resume from S3 and
    have timings of 4-8-8-24 T1 my idle temps are 43c-46c with same room temps. I've read tons of forums and still haven't found a fix for this. Is there any hope? ;;

    Glad to hear others appear stable as well. The specs below are free form in my signature. To find yours click the "User CP" above and you should see different options on the left sidebar 1 being to edit signature.

    Thanks for the info. This is my first build and I've found a lot of tips to avoid headaches. Hope I can return the favor one day. I plan on building more on to my rig and I'm sure once again these forums will come in handy. Call me quirky but this bug really does annoy me. I wonder why it hasn't been fixed in all this time. Seems everyone has narrowed it down to a bios issue.

    Not sure if it is fixable in the bios, I've heard from some that it is an actual bug in the x58 chipset that affects all x58 motherboards

    I guess that's good to hear? If it's just a reporting bug and doesn't cause performance issues it can be lived with. On the other hand if it's simply the luck of the draw if you will have problems or not they really need to get on this.

    Just did a few tests and even though my system is stable i still get a rise on my cpu idle/full load temp about 3c. Something is being changed other then just a reporting error. Can anyone else test this out?

    I rebooted and let it idle for 10 mins then went into s3 waited 10 mins, came out of s3 and waited 10 mins, temps were the same. I would expect them not to change since the only difference I notice amoung all everest readings is the cas timing being 4. This really must be a reporting error because I couldn't fathom it being 4 and everything still being stable especially since my timings are lower than specs already.

    Glad to hear it, maybe my cpu just wasn't warmed up. I hope those idle temps aren't to high though. My max load temps are about 60c-61c. If my idle temps aren't to high and its a simple reporting bug then I'll leave it alone and just be happy everything else works well.

    60-61c for core temps under load with your OC is fine. As long as you keep under 80C you won't reduce the life of your chip.
