    Default EP45-DS3R & E8400 & 2x2GB 1066MHz - Overclocking help required.

    Morning all and hello.

I'm trying to get some extra power out of my present rig:

    Specs:
    -Intel Core2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz (EO)
    -Gigabyte EP45-DS3R Bios version F10
    -Artic Cooling, Freeze 7 pro
    -Corsair 2x2GB 1066MHz (CM2X 2048- - 8500 C5) (5-5-5-15)
    -Nvidia GTX 260
    -Kingwing Mach1 800W power (ABT-800MA1S)
    -Microsoft Windows 7 X64.

I have been running this rig with no problems at stock speed for at least 6 months, stable and smooth.

However recent releases of of certain simulators are pushing my CPU and i'd like an extra boost.

I'm trying to get my cpu to run at between 3.6 and 4 Ghz, which i have been led to believe should be quite achievable and simple, however i have not found this to be the case.

I tried following this thread.. link to Help overclocking Gigabyte EP45-DS3R + E8400 but had no joy. The main difference being is i have 4GB RAM rather than 2Gb. I had similar intentions as jerel2k9, to OC between 3.6 and 4 Ghz. However i've failed terribly trying.

I've read that you can OC these chips to 3.6 by simply changing the FSB to 400 and nothing else, this does not work for me. I tried using Lsdmeasap's setting on page one, and also failed.

On failure.. had many :), my PC cycles at boot, prior to POST and then loads a backup BIOS config at a default 9x333 (3Ghz). I beginning to think my chip is just not a good OCer but i'm also a bit lost in the complications of my BIOS and a real novice at this, so I could easily be doing something daft.

Could anyone you possibly give me setting to achieve a simple 3.6Ghz? If this works i'd like to try and get closer to 4Ghz.

I could post settings that have failed... or my basic defaults as i'm running now, but i'm not sure what good this would do.

Thank you very much for any possible help or guidance.

Edit: Here is the RAM data sheet from Corsair.. http://www.corsair.com/_datasheets/T...048-8500C5.pdf

Just changing FSB won't work, the least you have to do is adjust memory frequency to set ram at it's spec.
Before you begin overclocking load optimized defaults.
Set PCI-E frequency manually to 100.
Set Voltages that are not refernces manually (except ram that may left auto or set to DDR-1066 voltage spec maually) to the value shown in BIOS.
    Set Performance Enhance to standard.
I know I am in a monirity on this but I preffer XMS profile set manually or left on auto, with all memory timings left on auto. Static tRead Value may be set manually to gain stability.
For a 2x2GB configuration you likely need more MCH Core in the range of 1.2-1.26v try with 1.2v to begin with.
After making this changes save them and see you can reboot with stock settings.
Check BIOS HWMonitor to verify ram voltage is set to it's specified value for DDR-1066, if it isn't set it manually.
Then you can try set FSB to 400, memory multiplier to 2.66D and CPU Ratio to 7.5, this will keep it on 3GHz and any changes need to be made to achive stability are probably memory related (DRAM/MCH Core voltage Static tRead etc.)
If all goes right you can then set multiplier to 9 and see if you can run 3.6GHz. This may or may not require more vcore depend on your chip.
Going from there to 4GHz may require more tweaking to ram settings and voltages.

I am not sure if DRAM Termination better be left auto or not, I guess auto will do for now.

Thanks so much for your help so far.

I've got it running at 3.6Ghz and just passed a 1 hour OCCT stress test. CPU never getting above 50C.

I'm sure there are some settings i did not get quite right.. on writing these up below i noticed my Static tRead Value values which i had set at what was shown have changed.. i've highlighted them is red.

This really is a dark art to me

It appears i should able to reach higher values, as i seem to be using stock CPU voltages and running at good temps.

What would you suggest I do from here? I don't want to stress the hell out of my rig.. but would love as much performance as is sensible.

    Thanks a lot!

    Wasn't that diffcult was it?
Could you post MemSet main snd spd windows screen capture?

You probably get 4GHz or above, the E8400 is great overclocker.
I make some benchmarks, memory/LinX/SuperPie and 3DMark (which currently showed no gain with my current video card) when I overclock to see what performance gain I have and do they meet the expectations.

To ensure that your system is really stable, you need to run your stress test for at least 8 - 10 hours, longer is better. You should run a series of 3 different tests:
    1) Small datasets to stress your cpu.
    2) Large datasets to stress your ram.
    3) Medium datasets for stressing both.

It's important to ensure that your system is stable at the current settings before you o/c higher.
Be sure to save your current settings as a bios profile. See this post for more info.

For the most part, your settings look good.

err would love to.. but not quite sure what "MemSet main snd spd windows" are? Doh!

Do you mean the CPU-Z windows.. memory & SPD for both slots??

You can find MemSet and other usefull tools in
    http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/late...30/#post284762
Memset give more detailed information about memory and spd settings than CPU-Z. Click the spd button to open the spd window.
