    Unhappy EP45-DS3 + Q6600 + 8GB = restart loop

Hi there.. I'm having all sorts of problems with my EP45-DS3. First off this is the spec of the pc:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz
    Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3 Intel P45
OCZ StealthXStream 600w Silent SLI Ready Power Supply
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA-II 32MB Cache
    Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C5 x 2
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler
    Pioneer DVR-216DBK
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB

When I power on the machine it starts booting but for it can power it powers off again. It then powers back on a second or two later only to power off again before post. It may do this cycle once, twice, or even six or more times before it posts. Even then, it will boot windows and hang randomly. This is all at stock speeds as I don't overclock and don't intend to.

I went off looking around the internet and came across some posts around increasing vocre, mch volts, and dram volts in order to stablise the machine, but none of this made any difference.

I've tried the system with a single stick of ram in slot one, and got the same restarting. I've removed all the components except CPU and got the same problem. I've cleared the bios, to no avail. reflashed the bios to the latest release (f9) and still got the same problem. So it stand then that with or without components to machine keeps restarting prior to posting.

Any suggestions would be appricaited :)

After boot cycles try to enter BIOS MIT section, do you get red message about incirrect overclock settings?

    No mate, sorry I don't.

Once the machine boots (after x number of restarts) it will boot vista and work as intended and then all of a sudden lock up...

Well if you won't enter BIOS MIT you won't see it.
When BIOS finally boots after the kloops press the del key to enter BIOS than entrt the MIT section, do you get red message when you do?

I don't have an issue with going into the BIOS once it's posts (after multiple restarts prior to posting). I don't get any red warning messages in the MIT which if I recall indicates issues with settings/overclock?

    cheers

    Yes.
If you haven't loaded optimized defaults yet please do.
A 4x2GB memory configuration usually requite more MCH Core, somewhere in the range of 1.2-1.28v preheps even a little more, Sometimes less MCH Core is needed.
While trying to stabilize your system, set Performance Enhance = standard.
Try MCH Core 1.2v first and if it down't help increase it up one notch at a time up to 1.28/1.3v
    Post back with your results.
Put your system spec in your signature with a link to your ram web page, it helps to know what it's all about when threads getting longer.

What is vdimm does BIOS HW Monitor shows?

Last night I did some more tweaking and got the system to boot without restarting. However, it started again the next time I reset the system. This morning it booted first time without restart from a cold boot, but when I did a restart from Vista it again went into the restart loop and did it 5 times before posting.

The vdimm (assuming that DDR18V is vdimm) is showing 1.904v in pc health.
    Vcore is showing: 1.252v
    +3.3v is showing 3.280v
    +12v is showing: 12.556v

I returned to the bios got the red error message, loaded optimized defaults and plugged in the settings below, with 2 exceptions. I have now increased MCGH Core to 1.260V and decreased the DRAM Voltage to 1.800v.

Just booted the system with mch core at 1.260v and it restarted before post. change it to 1.280v and it booted first time. going to test some more and will let you know.

After rereading your description again this morning it seems you've done pretty much everything.
Few other things you can still try, is trying with the board out of the case on a piece of cardboard or wooden surface, with one memory stick, with different video card/psu/cpu/keyboard(PS2 preferably) if you have them.

Thanks Chike, I'm actually pretty happy now. Last night I was about to throw in the towel, but after doing my research and reading up on this forum I tried again and all seems well :)

I've since rebuilt my vista machine, the instability caused vista to die a long and painful death, and now it boots first time when cold booting. Restarts from the OS as opposed to shutting down and cold booting still seem to be an issue, but knowing that now I can live with it.

    thanks
