More fans! More fans! (Adding up the cost of a True, fans, graphics & chipset coolers, a Swiftech kit doesn't look so expensive, but I already have a True.)

Tried switching fans around to reduce cpu temps but then graphics card started getting hot (92C). Swapping the 33cfm rear exhaust fan with the 43cfm side intake fan, the 33 was too weak to have much effect. Then found Stasio's mention of Nvidia System Monitor (NVIDIA System Monitor Software Informer: Latest version download, news and info about this NVIDIA Corporation program. A great graphics and system component monitoring application!)and its Performance section which allows manual adjustment of the GTX280 fan speed. Stock is 40%. Now running at 80%, and peaking at 80C in 3dMark06. At 92C I started getting artifacts and stutters in 3dMark. ED. Google says 105c max and then throttles.

Put a small fan on the side of the Northbridge.

I think that before I push further I'll at least have to get better fans, and maybe some better cooling solutions for nb and gpu.

If I buy an offset Thermalright HR-05/IFX Northbridge Chipset Cooler, which coolers should I get for southbridge and mosfets? I'm assuming that's the other two things cooled by the chipset heatpipe. I was looking at the Thermalright HR-09 s and u mosfet coolers. Are they good enough? What's better? Or is system temp of 40 to 47C ok for an x48 mobo? ED. Google says up to 70c. Seems hot compared to older boards.

For the graphics card I'm thinking THERMALRIGHT HR-03 GTX Rev. A

I'm sure DX9 used to be faster than DX10? Tried the FC2 Bench on the DX10 setting and got three more fps. Currently running it at 433 base frequency and 4.1GHz. Everythings happy, except when Vista decides to update in the middle of running 3dMark06.

I have R4-L2R-20CG-GP - Cooler Master for exhust and 2 R4-P9B-22AK-GP(not found in the US site) as front and side intakes, system is very quite, though the exhust is only at 1500 RPM for some reason connected to SYSFAN_2.
    Enzotech MOS-C1 on the mosfets.

    Chike,
Check out the PWM header thread for an explanation of the SysFan_2 header and why fans connected to this header run at lower speeds.

My mistake. The exchust is connected to SYSFAN_1 and rotating at 1956 which is in it's 10% spec. The one connected to SYSFAN_2 is the left intake which is indeed a PWM fan.

Until u brought it up, I hadn't spotted Sys_fan2 on the bottom edge of X48 board. Is it right then that this header speeds up a fan as the cpu gets hotter.

Cable managed the case after finding a cm690 case thread at xtremesystems.org, bought two more coolermaster 43cfm fans, and replaced side fan and added other to the filtered bottom intake. Recorded the following temps during a run through 3dMark07.

That's a lot better. When you quote load temps, is that from a particular program/benchtest?

My quoted temps are for LinX with max mem used, measured with RealTemp (calibrated with a room ambiant thermometer against CPU thermal diode) likely the highest temps CPU will ever reach.

EDIT: I never notice a change for the fan connected to SYS_FAN2, the CPU fan which is not PWN and controlled by voltage does change speed when CPU heats up.

Ah Chike, you said 73c, and i think you mean core temps ...

My core temps maxxed at 83c, cpu at 79c with linx, no errors. Cores idle around 40c.

Right now my cm690 base model case has the standard fans: (120mm exhaust, 120mm side,120mm front). I think they are all 43-44cfm.

I have added another one to the filtered base intake next to the PSU.

I've added a 40mm fan to the side of the northbridge heat pipe fins.

The True cpu cooler has another of those 43-44cfm coolermaster fans, feeding toward the exhaust fan.

The 450w vga psu with the loud little fans vents its heat back into the case.

I'm thinking 2 Scythe S-FLEX 120mm for cpu and exhaust, but which version? What's too loud?

    1200rpm existing fans: 44.73 CFM / 19.1 dBA
    1600rpm Scythe: 63.7CFM / 28.0 dBA
    1900rpm Scythe: 75.0CFM / 35.0 dBA

Yes 73c core temps running LinX with max memory.
From what I read in this forum the Thermalright 120 respond well to highr CFM fans and/or push-pull configuration. The 43 CFM is probably not enough, 90+ CFM is probably needed.
What are your Prime95 small FFT core temps? I thought they are better than mine (~64c) and your idle temps are 5c less than mine.

small fft is up to 63c by test 5 and by test 10 is intermittently showing 64c.
mentioned blend earlier. after 19 tests same.

you wouldn't be suggesting a Scythe Mugen 2 fan @ 2680rpm 93CFM by any chance?
nearest in oz seems to be
Scythe Ultra Kaze DFS123812L-2000 fan moves a hefty 87.63CFM at only 32.91dBA.
Scythe Ultra Kaze DFS123812H-3000 fan moves a powerful 133.60CFM at 45.90dBA.
but 38mm thick. Ram would be in the way, i think.
can find the 75cfm version but not 93.
