Well it is an x48, but yes, Anandtech articles on the Asus version. Guilty. I guess that's mch clock skew.

The Anandtech article said low tRd was linked to low Cas, so tried 4 at 1039 too, no go. They also said stock voltage 1.25v (14.1ns) was alright up to 425MHz with tRD of 6.

They then say overvolting to 1.45 (12.5ns) would allow a tRD of 5 at 400MHz, and that upping voltage to 1.6 (11.1ns) would allow that tRD of 5 at 450Mhz.

I'll have some of what they're tweaking.

Ya I am not sure, could be or maybe not?

Ya, CAS 4 is NOT going to work at 1000+ with your memory

Like I said, it's a LOT about the ram you are using for sure

There is no-one in Australia that sells high end crucial or mushkin. The nominated asia-pacific Mushkin reseller in Malaysia does not answer emails.

We have Corsair, Adata, G-Skill, Kingston, Transcend, Team, Patriot, Geil, Kingmax and OCZ. Psycho101, u could be right about g-skill.

Aus overclocking forum thread generally says g-skill & ocz best of locally available ddr2 ram, and bag corsair and kingston. Also say ddr2 no longer associated with extreme performance. Retro tech already?

My imagined path is adding a couple of Noctua fans, and going for 444MHz (4.21GHz) with 2.40B and 1066MHz on the ram. If that will have little effect on temps, I could just go ahead with that. I haven't done it before so around what MHz should temps "normally" start rising rapidly for the EO Wolfdale in my Bearlake?

    Done!

It'll hold 5-5-5-12 but not 5-5-4-12. Same 56.3ns, and read of 9010. No gain.

When my logon screen comes up half black or with black streaks across it, I imagine that indicates approaching instability. If so then 13 or 14 - does one run 5-5-5-13?

555-13 is fine, but I bet you can get 554-12 stable, of course if you are seeing no gains it may not be worth the hassle

It's possible that tRFC = 48 is a bit too tight with 5-5-x-12 primary timings @ 1066 speeds.

Refused to boot at 5-5-4-12, reverted to stock settings. Any remedy for that?

    At 14 I get 56.3ns and 9030 to 9020 read. At 13 get same but 9010-9020, and 9010 to 8990 on 12.

Did u see the ram question coupla posts back about OCZ and G-Skill etc? The OCZ takes more volts? The 1100MHz G-Skill unusual in that settings don't change much from 800 to 1100, or is that only the 1200 behaves like that?

no G-Skill9600 1200MHz in Oz but 1100 still on shelves. Can you tell me are they the pick of the list a few posts up of ram available here?

ProfJim: Hi! What do you suggest? Back to 52 and give it a try? I was a bit surprised it booted down to 46 or so but 48 saw gains in everest
