Thread: G31m-ES2L, No wireless detection?

    Default G31m-ES2L, No wireless detection?

Hey guys, it's been awhile and I'm just now finding time to get the internet running on the desktop I built nearly 6 months ago (too bad it's now obsolete:))

Anyway, I have an older Netgear WGR614v6 wireless router than I have hooked to my HP Pavilion laptop (what I'm using right now) via a Westell 6100 modem. Anyway, router's working fine since it's on this computer I'm using for internet but the desktop doesn't detect anything wireless.

Was I mistaken thinking the G31M-ES2L has wireless networking ability? On the new desktop it simply has the icon at the bottom of the desktop saying 'Network cable unplugged'.

Just wanted to verify if this MB actually can do wireless. And onboard H/W LAN is enabled in BIOS.

    Thanks guys!

Just a note: I did hook up a spare Ethernet cable to the gigabyte based desktop and internet is fine, just no wireless so far...

I do not see anything on the spec page for this motherboard that would lead me to think that it has built in wireless abilities: GIGABYTE - Product - Motherboard - Overview - GA-G31M-ES2L (rev. 1.x) . The only LAN I see mentioned is the Realtech RTL8111C for RJ45 ethernet connectivity. If wireless is something you need then you should have no problem adding a wireless network card.

The board has wired networking only.

You can buy a USB adaptor or a PCIe/PCI card to give wireless functionality. Very few boards have built in wireless. Some special editions and some high end HTPC boards might.

PrairieDog: You didn't see anything that led you to think wireless because you're NOT a dummy and I am. This was my first build since I was a kid (with an Amstrad PC6400 8086!!)
I don't know why I even was thinking that but it did work instantly w/the wired setup. Thanks for the confirmation guys!

Sorry. Didn't mean to give the wrong impression .... just that I couldn't see anything reguarding wireless abilities.

Sounds like the dummy comment was meant in good spirit and in fun.

It is a logical assumption that in this age of wireless tech, mobo's should really come with wireless as standard IMO. It'd be pretty easy to either give you a free adapter or have it onboard with an areal/antenna you plug in after installing, onto the backplate. Even better they could use the whole case as an antenna.

kile I said, if you do want wireless (if it's a HTPC or away from the router) there's a good range of USB adapters availible if space is at a premium. Some have crappy range when the dongle is used solo, but come with a cradle that boosts the reception dramatically. Uoi could even place the thing inside the case and thread the USB lead out of an expansion plate space.

Haha, didn't realize there were more responses....Yeah, definitely poking fun at myself so no worries. Thanks again for the input guys. I'm not sure why I assumed it was wireless but it works great otherwise. Just need to find the time to try my hand at a little OCing soon...that means I'll be back soon:)
