    Default EP45-UD3R RAM question

    I have the above mb with a C2D 6600 oc'd to 3.0 and 4 gigs of Corsair XMS 6400. I have available a 4 gig set of G. Skill 8500 that is having issues. When I install the 8500 the Intel Burn test fails everytime.

    These are my current settings with the Corsair 6400:

    Bear in mind, the computer is running fine and stable. I just figured since the native ram for this board is the 8500, why not use it. Will the difference even be noticable between the 6400 and the 8500? Assuming I can getit to work properly and be stable.

    I would try 3.20B memory multi and set g(G)MCH Frequency Latch to auto to start with.

    Using the 3.20B memory multiplier, your pc2-6400 might run fine at 1066 speeds with 5-5-5-15 primary memory timings.
    It looks like you have MCH Core = AUTO. If yes, this is probably your problem.
    Set MCH Core = 1.20 - 1.24 and your pc2-8500 will probably work. Note, sometimes 1.05 volts is needed for some memory.

    You probably won't notice any difference between running with 800MHz memory (4-4-4-12) and 1066MHz memory (5-5-5-15) speeds.

    You may find it useful to load optimised defaults after installing the G.Skill RAM. Even going as far as to clear the CMOS could help. It's possible that auto detected hidden settings are still being used by the board for your old RAM. This can mess up the system when running with the new RAM.

    What I would do is:
    • Clear the CMOS
    • Load optimized defaults
    • Save and exit
    • Re-enter the BIOS
    • Check the RAM is being detected as 1066 and alter it if not
    • Check VDIMM is at the max allowed by the RAM manufacturer
    • Set MCH core to 1.2V to start (may need more)

    profjim is correct, you likely won't notice much real world performance difference between DDR-800 @ 4-4-4-12 and DDR-1066 @ 5-5-5-15, but DDR-1066 will beat it out in synthetic tests and will also give a few extra FPS in some games etc. The G.Skill is more than capable of DDR-1066 if set up perfectly, so you may as well take full advantage of that.

    You don't say the exact model of the G.Skill RAM you're using. Is it the PK series? Maybe post a link to it on the G.Skill site.

    Also note that there is no native RAM speed really for your motherboard. Your Max RAM speed depends on the CPU. With a 333 FSB CPU setting a 4.00 multi will give 1333 RAM speed. This will be even higher if using a QX9770 which has a default FSB of 400MHz. Native speed usually refers to the maximum speed you can use without resorting to over clocking the FSB. Also the old "tradition" of using a 1:1 (or 1:2 in the case of DDR3) ratio for RAM no longer applies really. Running the RAM at its max speed more than over powers and minute benefit from using a 1:1 ratio (ie 2.00B and 2.00D).

    We need a link to specifications for both of your memory modules to best help you. This could be links to a pdf datasheet or the web page from the manufacturer's website for your specific models.

    Your posted bios template doesn't make it clear which settings are on AUTO or where you've manually changed settings.
    Accuracy is not important, IT'S EVERYTHING!! Any inaccuracies in your posted bios settings will slow down how quickly we can help you.

    Follow Psycho101's suggestions EXACTLY, then post your bios settings and include a screenshot with:
    Memset using the SPD and ">>" tabs
    cpu-z main screen
    EasyTune6 --> TUNER tab --> ADVANCE tab --> VOLTAGE tab

    Use the blank bios template in this post, and fill in the actual bios settings that you're currently using. If your bios says [AUTO], your bios template should say AUTO. If you've manually entered a different setting, replace the value to the right of the ":" with the actual value that you've set.
    Fill in all the "??" fields with the values displayed in your bios.

    You can find links to these programs in the Latest Overclocking Programs, System Info, Benchmarking, & Stability Tools thread.

    Wow, I am very grateful for the great responses. I have some work to do looks like :). I will begin the above suggestions asap but for me, that may mean this weekend. But until then, here is the link for the G.Skill

    On the one hand, as I suspected, the overall performance boost will be small, but, like Psycho101 wisely states, may as well take full advantage of it! I'm all for getting the most performance out of my equipment, just a bit fuzzy on how to go about it . I had tried to get my C2D 6600 oc'd with the G.Skill months ago but the settings were far from stable. I found a post on these boards by a member named bodean (I think) who had the same cpu but with 6400 ram so I swapped out the G.Skill and used the settings that I posted above to get to 3.0. It has just been bugging me since then how smooth that went and why the heck not go back to the 8500 ram and squeak out the additional performance it should offer. So, probably more info than you need or want :). Gotta get ready for work. I'll post back all of the info requested asap. Thanks again.

    One more quick question before I get started on this over the weekend.

    Psycho101 advised to "Check VDIMM is at the max allowed by the RAM manufacturer"

    Is this referring to the voltage for the ram? If so, per the specs on the G.Skill I have, that would be 2.0-2.1?

    Oh, and to clear the CMOS, the way I do this is to take out the battery on the mb, unless somebody has a better suggestion.

    Yes, VDIMM is the RAM voltage. As your G.Skill is 2.0-2.1, best tro start off with 2.1V. You may be able to reduce it to 2.0V later, but giving it the maximum now may prevent any trouble if 2.0V were to be not enough.

    To clear your CMOS, there is a set of two pins you need to connect with a metal object. If you look at the"bottom end" of the board, the end with the last PCI slot and near the pins for the case buttons, you'll see the two pins above all the case connector ones, outside of their plastic surround. Have the case near a source of good light and you'll see CLR_CMOS just above them. Sometimes it may be needed to short the pins for upwards of 10 minutes, but every time I've done it only 20 seconds was needed for a complete clear.

    OK, here we go. I have cleared the CMOS, installed the 8500, loaded Optimized settings and verified in that it is recognized as 1066. I made only 2 changes in Bios at that point, set Ram from Turbo to Standard and upped the voltage to 2.1.

    Here is a screen shot of CPU-Z and ET6 (I could not install Memset as my desktop DPI is at a custom setting due to vision issues and Memset will only work at the default 96 DPI).



    I ran Intel BurnTest successfully at max on 5 passes. I then went back and tried to oc to 3.0 with the below settings.

    Here is another screen of CPU-Z and ET6 after attempting the above settings. The computer booted OK the first time but when I checked CPU-Z the cpu was at default 2.4 speed. I went back into Bios and changed the CPU Frequency to 333, the computer failed to boot, went into a loop then after several minutes when I was about to have to unplug it to try to get it to reset, the desktop finally did load but again at the 2.4 default speed. I assume the settings above are so wrong the board just used a FailSafe setting to boot.





    Looking forward to recommendations to get the 8500 stable and cpu at 3.0. Thanks in advance for the help!

    Try the following corrections I have made in red and see what that gives you. If your cpu's default vid at stock volts is 1.325 thas really high. My cpu's vid is 1.225 and needs 1.35 with LL off to get 9x450 stable.
