Mainly cus of the budget, over all the whole thing is about 800 euro (i started off with a budget of 580 € hehe ), and i didnt see that much difference between ht and non ht .

(10 to 13% improvement maybe with HT on the same processor?(not the i5)) in relation to the price (with ht its 30 % more expensive, compared to the i5), at least where i live.

So if i were to go for the i7 860 i would be gainning processor power, mainly because its a faster cpu not beacuse of HT. Then there is less power consumption with the i5, but that was not one of the main reasons...just a small plus, even though i have read as Psycho states people disbling the HT on the i7 in various cases to reduce this factor.
but dont get me wronge i wouldnt say no to having an i7 mind you!! :) so as usual it does come down to budget.

btw thx for the info on the coolers, they´re steadelly coming out yea.

Well for $800 you could have got a i7 920 setup likely, did you look into that after you decided you would spend 800 instead of 500?

yea, but it wasnt cheap around here
and yea ok, its is possible to get an i7 920 on a 800 € budget, but the system i wanted to set up with the i7 was around 1050 euro... the cheapest i can in get in spain was

    Core™ i7-920 - 269,99 €
    GA-EX58-UD3R (for example) 174,99 €
    G.Skill Tri-Kit DIMM 6 GB DDR3-1333 F3-10666CL7T-6GBPK -109,00 €

    Thats around 550 Euro

leaving 250 euro for power supply, graphics, hd and case. (psu(90 euro) and gfx(150€) i wanted are already 250 €)

Where as the ram mobo and cpu im gettting sum up to 387 Euro, looking at the reviews and comparing i didnt think it was really worth it. I know the components are pricey but they were the best i could get at a store, getting it through a pure e shop was around 50 euro less expensive, and there werent that many that i could find for the prices menioned. Also , The msi an asus sites have a "where to buy" section where stores can be easily found, but no bargin...

Also and maby more importantly i was about the get a q9550 system(around 790 euro) but i couldnt get that damn UD3P board anywhere so i waited and waited and the P5Q PRO was the next option and then... i5 came out.

Ahh, well I guess that would be a little more then. Do you ebay? May be able to still get things cheaper that way

Well it does sound like i5 may be the way to go for you then, They are still proving to be good performers though anyway so it will be a good system setup since you can't get X58.

yep i did check ebay, iv never bought through ebay so i wanted to limit the shops through spain/ europe, and looked quite alot for the q9550, a bit less for the i5, but it did came down to the same conlcusion, only got around 50 euro cheaper, without inlcuding the cost of the pakage being sent around 20- 30 euro... so i was back to the old drawing board...

i also checked the q9550 system i was going to set up with newegg prices to se how it turned out and it came down to 200 € cheaper!!

"since you can't get X58." yeah true :) hehe

    cheers

    If I could not get X58, I'd get i7 860 instead

Of course if you can only afford the i5, I still think a P55 would be better than building a new 775 setup

Feel free to use an IDE drive for storage if you wish, there's no performance hinderance with that, other than that transfer speeds are slower via IDE. You may find that, if the IDE drive is a quick one, file copies from one drive to the next will be much quicker than from different partitions on the same drive.

I wouldn't use the IDE drive for programs, any other OS or the swap file though.
