Nice. I like Geil. Built an Opteron 170 single core (2.0GHz > 2.8GHz OC'd on air) with a couple of DDR-400 sticks, the yellow heat spreader ones. they clocked nicely to DDR 480 ish on 2.7V. They also looked really nice, and were just the right shade of yellow, if you know what I mean, not too banana-like. They were solid as a rock and did CAS 2.5 the whole time, which was somewhat exceptional. I'm sure they would have done more clockspeed but my friend wanted low timings AND good clocks.

So are you getting it built for you? That's a shame in a way if you are. It's awesome to do a build yourself. The sense of achievement is immense. regardless though, you'll enjoy your nice shiny new rig.

I've not had chance to play with a Lynfield yet, but my video buff uncle (he fits home theatres by trade) will be getting one as his studio PC. I managed to persuade him to get the mid range model, as nearly double the price for 130MHz is madness, unless you're a real OC addict (and there's nothing wrong with that) and are banking on the 870 being binned higher in terms of silicon quality. I'll visit him and OC it to 3.8GHz to 4GHz as a thank you for calibrating my Dell 2209WAf monitor.

Please let us know how you get on and maybe post up a few pictures and screen grabs of performance etc. Apparently the 720 blows anything else between £150 and £250 out of the water in performance terms.

woops sorry, when i meant "system will be ready", i meant the store will have all the components, i will have bought them and i will set up the machine my self.

    i agree 100% , it's awesome to do a build yourself.

sure ill do performance tests, they will have to be on stock ,might need some tips though, cooler will come later on, . Iv been looking around and iv seen certain bios settings that should be enabled/ disabled on the p55 ud boards to overclock and ill need to comfirm them, first timer with a giga byte here! and practical oc knowledge is as good as my chinese ( i dont know chinese, fyi : ), my main target would be to get to 3.4Ghz - 3.6Ghz (stock),

btw iv got the fix the title its not i5-720 !! its i5-750 :)

    cheers

Well just got the components yesterday! and iv set it all up.
In the end since they didnt have the vapor x,so they chucked in a Sapphire Toxic 1 GB for the same price. Im installing directx and stuff like that. Iv only ran cpu z and speed is at 2.7 Ghz, may cus of optimum bios settings? evryhting is on default settings.

anyhow atm the moment im very happy with the i5 and P55 UD4 board:),

in any case iv beed looking at the sticky post on oc,benchmarks and so on. Any recommendation on whats apps, there are so many?!

    cheers!

Currently your CPU is running in the max turbo mode for all 4 cores which is 2.8GHz. According to Intel's processor finder page: "Maximum Intel® Turbo Boost Technology frequency per core - 4 core: 2.80 GHz, 3 core: 2.80 GHz, 2 core: 3.20 GHz; 1 core: 3.20 GHz" and I think this is also dependant on how good your cooling is.

For stress testing apps, Prime95, Orthos Prime, OCCT and IBT are the most thorough. Benchmarking wise, I use SuperPi Mod, Everest Ultimate RAM benchmark, 3DMark Vantage, Crysis CPU and GPU tests, Far Cry 2 and the 64bit Cinebench tests. Note that ATI always has an advantage in Cinebench and mostly beats Nvidia's acceleration of the app by almost double. This doesn't mean that CUDA is flawed, or Nvidia are crap, it's just good support from AMD/ATI on that particular app.

there aren't many P55 guides out there yet. You may want to search XS to see what's going on there, as well as awaiting an answer from here. P55 uptake is gradual but getting more popular every day.

To run Crysis as a benchmark you need to own a copy of the game. If you have a copy, the download link for the benchmark addon is here: Crysis Benchmark Tool 1.05 Final download from Guru3D.com .
