Default Some tweak help for i7-920/UD4P/G.SKILL ram

    Hi there,

    I have the Gigabyte EX58-UD4P, i7-920 (D0), and G.SKILL DDR3 triple-channel kit (3 x F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ = 6GB). I am using the stock intel cooler.

I just upgraded the BIOS to F10d, as suggested by some folks here.

So what I want to do now is find the best tweaked-out BIOS settings without overclocking the CPU. So really, I'm talking about tweaking the RAM settings.
Right now I have only tried 2 settings - leaving all the RAM stuff at defaults, or setting it to XMP profile. At defaults it runs at 533mhz (PC-1066) and the timings I believe are 8-8-8-20 or something. With XMP it runs at 800mhz and 9-9-9-24. However, some of the "overvoltage LEDs" for the motherboard turn on.

Can anyone assist in getting my bios settings configured for optimal performance?

also, what if i wanted to do a "modest" overclock with the stock cooler... say, so the CPU hits 3.0GHz in Turbo mode? I guess I need to run the BCLK at 143mhz? can anyone give some advice on that? thanks.

I have already read a lot of the posts in this forum but some of it can be confusing.

for an overclock of 3ghz leave everything on auto and set ram voltage in bios to 1.66 ram muti to as close as your rams rated speed as you can without going over, set cpu voltage to normal and set qpi/vtt to 1.20000 volts you can use xmp or enter timings manually as 9.9.9.24 or use xmp but make sure you manually set ram volts to 1.66

I don't understand - why should ram voltage be 1.66?

It doesn't have to be at 1.66V seeing as how yours is rated 1.5V-1.6V. However, it's recommended to leave it at (for now) so that we can eliminate any variables when you do plan on overclocking. ;)

if its rated at 1.6 set it at that as it will need full voltage to run at its rated speed

If you need more help with your ram, grab a template from my signature and give me your settings you are trying and I can advise what you may change or improve.

As for an overclock on stock cooler, not sure really. Maybe 3.0-3.2 would be ok, just depends

I use this ram, see sig for my settings. it will run stable at rated speed and timings at 1.5v, it will also run stable at 1600 with 8 8 8 21 timings with 1.6v. Pretty decent low voltage kit.

OK, try these settings to get some out of Auto, and to try to improve performance a little until you get a better cooler >>

Dank, are you saying that I can run it at 9-9-9-24-2T / 800mhz (1600) with only 1.5 volts??? If so, thats awesome!

Because last night I tried 800mhz with 1.60 volts just for the hell of it... it made my CPU run a lot hotter!
OCCT-Linpack was making me hit 92 degrees celsius (in RealTemp) after just 4 minutes!
When my memory is at 1.50 volts I never get that hot...

I know there are 2 things I need to change: 1. case cooling and 2. cpu cooling
Case cooling is easier and it helps my video card so I shall do that first and see how things improve.
