    Default BIOS and MB questions

I have the EX38-DS4 MB and use 2 SATA drives not in RAID but in AHCI. I also have one SATA DVD RW drive. I have Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

My first question is in the BIOS when choosing AHCI, do I select disabled or enabled for SATA Port 0-3 Native Mode?

My other question concerns the SATA ports on the MB. There are two sets of SATA connectors on the MB with one set being yellow and the other orange. What is the difference between these two sets? I imagine there must be a reason why they are colored differently and in separate locations.

    Thanks!

Motherboard Manual for your viewing large so allow PDF time to load.
    http://china.giga-byte.com/FileList/...ex38-ds4_e.pdf
You will want to perform a clean install of Windows with the AHCI drivers supplied by your motherboard. I suggest downloading the most up to date intel AHCI drivers. Or at least use these (scroll down)---> GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - Driver - GA-EX38-DS4
Connect the 90 end of the SATA wire to the HDD that you have designated for Windows then the other end to SATAII_0 Then connect another SATA wire to SATAII_1 and to the extra HDD. These are the 2 yellow SATA connectors. Next for compatibility issues I suggest you connect any SATA DVD or CD roms to SATAII_4or5 Thats the rear 2orange ones. Then go into bios and set as follows:
    SATA RAID/AHCI Mode [AHCI]
    SATA Port0-3 Native Mode [Enabled]
    USB Controller [Enabled]
    USB 2.0 Controller [Enabled]
    USB Keyboard Support [Disabled]
    USB Mouse Support [Disabled]
    Legacy USB storage detect [Enabled]
    Azalia Codec [Auto]
    Onboard H/W 1394 [Enabled]
    Onboard H/W LAN1 [Enabled]
    Onboard H/W LAN2 [Enabled]
     SMART LAN1 [Press Enter]
     SMART LAN2 [Press Enter]
    Onboard LAN1 Boot ROM [Disabled]
    Onboard LAN2 Boot ROM [Disabled]
    Onboard IDE Controller [Enabled]
    Onboard Serial Port 1 [3F8/IRQ4]
    Onboard Parallel Port [378/IRQ7]
    Parallel Port Mode [SPP

I have Vista Ultimate 64-bit installed so I don't think the Intel ICH9R/ICH10R Driver (Preinstall driver) is needed--correct?

I already changed the BIOS to AHCI with Vista installed, any problem with that? I also installed the Intel Matrix Storage Manager after the OS. Meanwhile, should I install that other driver (Intel ICH9R/ICH10R SATA RAID Driver) you suggested? If yes, how would I do it?

I will be going to Windows 7 so kind of pointless doing a reinstall of Vista.

I have Azalia Codec [Auto] set to disabled because I use a sound card.

When I do go to Windows 7 and do a clean install, how do I get that Intel ICH9R/ICH10R SATA RAID Driver installed?

Do you know why the SATA connectors are in sets of yellow and orange?

    No

I don't know you can try it and see. If you start getting stop errors you can figure on a clean install. Time will tell. If you already have the intel drivers then you may not need to install another version, but the urls I provided are from Gigabyte for that board.

No I just sent you a url for all the drivers suggested by Gigabyte for your motherboard and Windows Vista 64. If you don't need the drivers then don't install them. I don't understand why Gigabyte put that there.

Unhappy Re: BIOS and MB questions

Your modo has 6 sata2 connectors and no Gsata connectors.
The 2 yellow sata connectors are for sata_0 and sata_1.
The 4 orange connectors are for sata_2 through sata_5.
There is room for 2 Gsata connectors on your mobo next to the orange connectors, but they are unused.
The "usual" mobo setup is for 6 yellow Intel sata connectors and 2 purple JMicron Gsata connectors.

Maybe the automated robots on the mobo assembly line are color blind.
