    Default Re: GA-EP45-UD3R/UD3 Overclocking for first time

    A google search using:
    delayed OR staggered spin up
    yielded the following post on the AnandTech forum;
    I'm trying to get this to work with my 180 watt file server. I currently have 4 seagate 1TB in there. If I leave only 3 drives the system boots fine but if I activate the 4th drive the computer shuts off a few seconds into boot. After the 2nd boot it starts up just fine (the computer reboots automatically). I have a rocketraid 3510 and tried to set up staggared spin up but it doesn't seem to work. No matter what setting I leave it at all the drives start up at once. Am I doing something wrong?
    There weren't any responses to the post.

    The following information is from Western Digital Corporation (WDC) sata installation guides:
    WDC Sata HDD PM2 Controlled Spinup Mode (2004)

    PM2 Mode – To designate the drive as power-up in standby (power management 2 or PM2) enabled, install the jumper shunt on pins 3 and 4. The mode enables controlled spinup, mainly used for server/workstation environments operating in multiple drive configurations.

    IMPORTANT: PM2 mode requires a compatible BIOS that supports this feature. If PM2 is enabled and not supported by BIOS, the drive will not spin up and therefore will not be detected by the system.
    2079-001042-A06 07/05 (2005

    The default setting for WD SATA hard drives varies depending on the model. To determine the default setting for your drive, look at the drive label on the top of the drive. DO NOT change the default setting if you intend to use the drive in a desktop computer.

    Change the jumper settings ONLY if you intend to use the drive in an enterprise storage environment. For more information on these advanced settings, obtain the full version WD SATA Installation Guide at support.wdc.com.
    SSC_DIS Mode (Default) — Enable or disable the spread spectrum clocking feature. Default setting is disabled.
    OPT1 — Only for factory use.
    OPT2 — Only for factory use.
    On their website, they stated that using PM2 is OK for workstation/desktop setups, go figure

    Some hard drives use a special HDD tools CD to tweak settings such as acoustic noise management and other HDD functions. You will need to check with the manufacturer to see how to implement staggered / delayed / PM2 start up.

    Let us know what you find out.

    More answers later if someone doesn't answer them for you first.

    Thanks profJim.

    If you suspect that it might be the HDD that did it, tonight I will boot without a single HDD to see if it will eliminate the problem. Then we can cut HDD from the equation.

    OK here is the update.

    Code:
    -Boot without a single HDD or any optical drive connected = 2 step
    -Boot with HDD(s) and optical drive and with CPU Host Clock Control (CHC) enabled = 2 step
    -Boot with HDD(s) and optical drive and with CPU Host Clock Control (CHC) disabled = 1 step
    It seems that when CHC is enabled, the MB will perform 2 step boot everytime. I've tried O/C FSB by 20Mhz, 10Mhz even not overclock at all (just enable CHC and set everything manually at stock speed), and the result was the same - 2 step.

    So it's pretty clear for me that only way to make it single boot is to disable CHC.

    If I can't overcome that, I come up with some ideas. I think I may take all HDDs, except the OS one, out of the case and power them separately (I have a spare Enermax 460W). I may even put them in a nice small case.

    The HDDs will be connected to the PC through 2 eSata ports. This way I can power them on whenever I want to access the data.

    But darn it! I shouldn't have to do all this.

    If anyone has any better idea, it would be great to hear it.

    @PrTv
    What is the the mobo version number for both systems?
    This info is in the lower left (rear) corner of the mobo and will say REV: 1.?
    You're using the F9 bios, kimboy11 is using F6, and Powergiga is using F11.
    It's recommend that you use the latest version (final or beta) as the most recent bios updates will be in most recent version. If you prefer a conservative approach, use the final version (without a letter at the end).
    To avoid confustion, please post a cpuz screen-shot that includes the cpuz Mainboard screen.

    @kimboy11
    The major difference in your settings from post #44 is that all your memory settings are set to Auto.
    Post a screen-shot that displays:
    Memset using the SPD and ">>" tabs
    cpu-z CPU and Mainboard screens (you can run several instances of cpuz at the same time)
    EasyTune6 --> TUNER tab --> ADVANCE tab --> VOLTAGE tab (only the VOLTAGE tab is needed)
    This is an example of the info that should be displayed (without the MainBoard screen).

    After you've posted the screen-shot of your current setup, change CPU Host Frequency to 401MHz and repeat your stability tests. Longer stress testing is encouraged to ensure that your system is stable. An overnight test for 8 - 12 hours (or longer) is best.

    When you boot your system, do you have the same double boot symptoms as PrTv?

    @kimboy11

    Make sure that the following settings are set:

    Advanced Settings
    CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E) ---------------- : [Disabled]
    C2/C2E State Support ------------------- : [Disabled]
    x C4/C4E State Support ----------------- : [Disabled]
    CPU Thermal Monitor 2 (TM2) ------------ : [Enabled]
    CPU EIST Function --------------------- : [Disabled]

    Your screen-shots show that your cpu multiplier is 6. This is normal when your system is at idle or low cpu load conditions.
    The Disabled settings are recommended while you are overclcoking.
    Once you have reached your final overclocking goals, you can enable the power savings options and then repeat your stability tests.

    That's interesting.

    Now I'm at the office and can't get the BIOS version for you, profJim, but I'm 100% sure it's F9.

    kimboy has F6 with his MB.

    I'll try the most recent one (F11) first, and if it doesn't help, I'll try downgrade to F6.

    I'll carefully follow the instruction posted here when flashing to ensure that nothing will go wrong.

    @PrTv
    Sounds like a good plan.
    And no i'm not having the double boot problem.
    That's interesting.
    That's why I asked.
    Let us know if you're running the 1.0 or 1.1 motherboard version.

    With FSB in the mid to lower 400MHz range the B-strap will allow tRD to be set 1 click lower (for better performance) than the D-strap.
    It would be interesting to see if using the 2.00B setting helps with your dual boot issues.
