    @kimboy11
Below 400MHz FSB you should use 2.00B.
Above 400MHz FSB, you can try either the B or D MCH straps.
Some find it easier to get their systems stable using the D strap.
Sorry for any confusion in post #49, my recommendation was that PrTv might want to try using the B strap to see if it could help with his dual boot issues.

Given the problems you've had with a "simple" overclock to 400MHz, it's best NOT to change many bios settings at one time.
Once you've reached your o/c goals, we'll help you optimize your memory timings for optimal performance.

VID the simplest way to think of it is the maximum applied voltage (Vcore) that should be needed to enable the cpu/a particular cpu to function at stock speed.
utilities such as core temp will read the vid directly or you will find it in bios under cpu v when you boot up at standard settings.

Pv im thinking your memory could be the same modules as mine just not as tightly binned.do see what they will clock to and at what voltage .it shouldnt take that long.

There is no direct nb temp readout (Ive applied a seperate sensor for the nothbridge),
The sys temp sensor ..as Pro Jim says is loctated somewhere around nb.. may be closer to sb.
Thw mch/northbridge temp remains fairly close to system temp there can be up to 5* of variation ive found depending on load and direct northbridge fan cooling or not.

The 58C temperature readout is probably cpu temp, even tho it may not be labelled as such..then you will have 4 cpu core temps,a gpu core temp, a system temp and possibly a hdd temp.

Thats 5 cpu temps in total .the main cpu temp will start up low probably much lower than the cpu core idle temps.
When the pc is warmed up and under load the cpu temp can approach/equal the coolest core temp readout(Ive found)55-65C under overclock.
the system and hdd temps are generally in the 30-38C range

I was looking around for my old screenshots for a 490 fsb one ,first one I found is 500 fsb which i dont really run anymore because of the higher voltages needed but youll get the general idea from the readouts.

I'm still at the office ATM, damn life.
I'll try the new bios in a few hours and let you guys know how it goes.

My and my dad's board are 1.1 rev.

BTW, I found this thread, in which many people claim to have this exact problem with their board, but in that case it's EX58-UD5, not the model of our topic. Some guys from that thread said the problem was fixed after a beta bios was flashed.

In our case, I suspect that BIOS may have something to do with this, and will try if F11 fixes this problem, if not, I may go back to F6 and kimboy doesn't have this problem with it.

    UPDATE:

    I tried the following:

    1. Flash F11 bios (Q-Flash), load optimized settings and then OC = double boot
    2. Flash F6 Bios (Q-Flash), load optimized settings and then OC = double boot
    3. Flash back to F11 Bios, load optimized settings, but this time No-OC = single boot
    4. F11 Bios, with CPU Host Clock Control Disabled, I adjust ram speed to the rated speed (FSB 400) = double boot.

It seems that OC actually has nothing to do with this but memory frequency does.

The problem is that I can't overclock with mem speed untouched. It's so sensitive that I can't even set strap without getting double boot.

I tried this with my and my dad's board (both Rev 1.1) and with different brand of memory (G.Skill in my sig and Corsair Value Selected).

I don't have any idea ATM.

Memory incompatibility is a possibility, but many forum members use G.Skill memory with no problems.
See if you can borrow some similar high quality ram to test with.

You've got a high quality psu, so that probably isn't an issue.
The only suggestion I have at this point is to try testing with different borrowed hardware, even replacing the cpu and psu.

A real long shot would be for you to swap motherboards with your dad. YUK!!

I think your best bet is to put the remaining hard drives in a networked box.
Are either of the video cards overclocked?

I would not worry about it at all, if your settings hold just ignore the double boot and overclock away. I would not let something so simple as this keep me from overclocking or make me spend days testing.

This is normal, be lucky you are not on X58 where a triple bootup can be normal as the board checks the settings, and reboots to load them. Same is happening to you, the board is loading the settings and checking them (First Boot), applying them and going ahead with the post process (Second boot). This is not required at defaults because there is nothing changed that needs to be checked before applied

    Test #3: FSB = 333 and memory speed = 800MHz?
    Test #4: FSB = 400 and memory speed = 800MHz?
    --> using 2.00B? using 2.00D?

Sometimes using 399 or 401MHz has solved problems.

    Lsdme,
I think is major concern is with his 3 or 4 HDD setup and the possible long term wear and tear on the hard drives.

    Update:

    Damnit!
With F11 bios my Q8400 can't even pass "boot from CD/DVD" screen (it's the screen on which the system try to boot from CD or whichever preferred devices). With the same config (in my sig) I can't even get into windows, let alone running prime.

So now I'm back to F9 and trying to squeeze one last drop out of it @3.40Ghz @ 1.350Vcore.

    Last time I couldn't survive Prime95 at 3.40 Ghz @1.344V, so I change FSB from Latch 400 2.00D to FSB 333 2.00B.

If it fails, I think I have to settle with 3.36Ghz.

About the double boot thing, I think my best bet is taking out all my HDD (except one that contains OS) and power them separately as mentioned earlier, so I can let the damn PC boot as many times as it feels like, because I'm now fed up with it.

FYI, currently my full load temp is around 68C /w aircon (ambient ~24-26), and 78C without aircon (ambient ~30-34C). IMO, the CPU is already too hot and I don't want to add any more trouble by cranking the VCore up to the maximum 1.3625 (I'm currently at 1.34xx).

    ___________________

By the way, regarding the temp, if I want to take out some more heat of the CPU, what I should do, if say, 1.3500 or 1.3625 are to be used?

I think my cooler, although not one of the best, should be up to the task. You can see the product's website here, on which you can also see the links to various reviews. From the reviews, you'll know that its performance is quite good.

When the heatsink was installed, I also made sure that thermal grease was applied properly (I used TuniQ TX-2) and HS was installed properly (all pins down and firmly attached to the MB).

And is it OK to run the CPU this hot (I don't want to turn on the aircon everytime I want to play some game).
