    You've got a high quality psu, so that probably isn't an issue.

    My dad's MB also has this problem with his E7500, so can I say that it somehow has been indirectly tested already?

    That's a good advice, but if possible I wouldn't want to spend any more money ATM (planning to buy the Sennheiser HD800 soon), so I think my best bet is to use my spare PSU to power all my HDD and connect them to eSata ports.

    Are either of the video cards overclocked?

    Not at all. Actually my 9600 is overclocked but only when I want to play some game (RivaTuner profile).

    After you've:
    1) flashed your bios
    2) load optimized bios settings
    3) reboot and enter bios
    4) applied new bios settings
    There's no guarantee that the stable bios settings from the previous bios version will be stable with the different bios version.
    About the double boot thing, I think my best bet is taking out all my HDD (except one that contains OS) and power them separately as mentioned earlier, so I can let the damn PC boot as many times as it feels like, because I'm now fed up with it.
    Sounds like a pretty good kludge to me!
    FYI, currently my full load temp is around 68C /w aircon (ambient ~24-26), and 78C without aircon (ambient ~30-34C). IMO, the CPU is already too hot and I don't want to add any more trouble by cranking the VCore up to the maximum 1.3625 (I'm currently at 1.34xx).
    Your core temperatures look pretty good for your room temperatures. There is a nearly 1 to 1 relationship of room temperature to core temperatures rising amd falling. I've verified this with my system when I tracked room temperatures from 15 - 29 (C).
    Here's my kludge, create 2 stable bios profiles, one for lower room temperatures (e.g. higher o/c) and the other one with a lower overclock and lower CPU Vcore voltage.

    You'll do your north bridge a favor by adding an additional cooling fan that blows directly on your N/B heatsink.

    For that speed (lowish) at say 25C that is a little hot.
    I couldnt really sit at a pc if room temp was over 30 but thats just me.
    power consumption with on overclocked cpu increaes a lot ..use everest to check yours.
    The full load on the accessories rail of the psu(and what its limit is I dont know) but it is stamped on it.

    If u do take out the other hdds from the power loop..your pc would be very similar to mine
    V similar mbrd
    same gx card (same overclock utility)
    differences being:
    1.same cpu but with the option of a x8 multiplier

    2.Memory(Gskill)
    I dont know its capabilities but its as close to mine as you can get without being the same memory type.
    Have you tried testing it at all as suggested above..by keeping the cpu speed low and using a multiplier other than 2:00?

    How fast will it go while keeping 4-4-4-12 timings and at what dram voltage.To test that you will be increasing dram voltage and also mch voltage.
    How fast will it run at 5-5-5-15 timings and with what voltage for ram and mch.

    I can tell you my memory will hold 4-4-4-12 timings up to a maximum of 900mhz from memory(no pun intended) but at that speed it needs approx 2.2v in bios(2.16 V actual).
    Mch i cant remember but was probably over 1.24
    Switching to 5-5-5-15 timings its good at around 1.95v bios at 900mhz ,gradually increasing to 2.08V in bios at 980mhz(2.05V actual)
    1000mhz and above needs like 2.2V bios and for a few mhz more 2.25 V etc.
    Your memory, if its a good batch may perform exactly the same,or may need slighty more voltage .
    I mentioned above that some people using your memory(ive read) need 2.15V in bios to get 800mhz stable.(on our boards thats going to equate to 2.12Vapprox actual and could drop to 2.11V under load).
    840mhz you might need 2.16 /2.18 in bios for dram V at 4-4-4-12,I dont know you will have to experiment a little.

    I personally wouldnt worry about running up to 2.3v for ram in bios but thats just me and if i can get away with less great.

    Mch core V that you are using ,I feel is a little low.. I cant remember when i last used 1.24V mch core but i wouldnt have any problem using up to 1.32 at least while testing memory.
    Over 1.4 V id start to get a little nervous but ive tried 1.xx just for testing

    On the cpuV 1.34V in bios is going to work out more like 1.31V actual and if it was my cpu (Q8200) that would be about what i would need for 3.36-3.4Ghz,BUT I dont have a x8 multiplier.
    For 3.43(490 cpu ref) I need 1.3625V (approx 1.328V actual) .
    For 3.5Ghz (500 cpu ref) I need 1.39375V (approx 1.36V actual).

    The Q8400 from reviews/tests on the web/net does go to approx 3.9-4Ghz which is about what you would expect taking into account 45nm quads dont like much above 490-500 fsb ref.


    What do i think..right now you are using a cpu voltage at a fsb i would probably be using a voltage of 1.25V in bios on(x7 multiplier)
    I wouldnt need to use 1.30V + until around 470+ fsb.

    In theory you shouldnt need 1.34V + for cpu until around 3.6Ghz say 450 fsb.Then like 1.39V (1.36 actual) around 485fsb,but im not sure whether bios revisions have a q8400 taken into account.If there is some bios problem..like the board somehow thinks its a q8200 then run it at a 7 multiplier and 485 fsb(assuming the memory can take it)+ you will need higher mch V.

    Running your cpu on a 7 multiplier at 3.4ghz will give you more performance even with 5-5-5-15 on the memory than running at 3.4ghz on an 8 multiplier.

    Either way Id test my memory for its limits to make sure that isnt the block,you dont want to be just ramping up cpu voltage to compensate for other components.

    nb with temperatures in excess of 30C in the room i wouldnt expect that kind of performance..more like 3.6-3.7ghz depending on cooling.

    Congratulations kimboy.

    Want to go further?

    In my case, the highest I could make it pass the first screen is 3.6Ghz @1.3625 but it wasn't stable at all (BSOD).

    Reducing it to 3.52 @1.3625 I could make it to windows and it seemed to work fine, but couldn't survive Prime.

    At 3.36 @1.344 I think it's stable but the temp is too hot (72C full load is way too much for my taste). I don't know if it's anything to do with my CPU Termination @1.3V. Tonight I'll see what will happen if I reduce CPU Termination from 1.30 to 1.28 or 1.26.

    Many people I know use as high as 1.45 Vcore, 1.6x CPU Termination Voltage and push it even further, but I don't think it's worth it.

    BTW, how is your temp full load (your room temp as well).

    Nice work, 2 steps down, several more to go.
    It's important to watch your temperatures. Your older Zalman cooler might not be up to the task of cooling your cpu.
    Temperatures over 75 (C) with Intel BurnTest (IBT) are not good. Prime95/OCCT/Orthos temperatures up to about 65 (C) are acceptable.
    Naturally, lower is better.

    We can best help you if you post your bios template and a single screen shot that displays:
    Memset using the SPD and ">>" tabs
    cpu-z CPU and Mainboard screens (you can run several instances of cpuz at the same time)
    EasyTune6 --> TUNER tab --> ADVANCE tab --> VOLTAGE tab (only the VOLTAGE tab is needed)
    This is an example of the info that should be displayed (without the MainBoard screen).
    The maximum size for an attached file is about 150KB, so you might have to reduce the size of your screen-shot file by resizing it and possibly lowering the number of colors from 32M to 16M.

    We need this information to confirm bios settings and verify memory settings.
    Some also include the stress test screen final results, along with RealTemp (or CoreTemp), and HWmonitor.
    Links to downloading these programs are available from the Latest Overclocking Programs, System Info, Benchmarking, & Stability Tools thread.
    Before you o/c further, save your current bios settings as bios profile using F11 from the main bios screen. You can save up to 8 different bios profiles. Give the saved profile a meaningful name, such as 401x8stable.

    Stabilty note: CPU Termination (aka VTT) is usually at least 0.05 - 0.10 volts lower than CPU Vcore. Increasing this usually helps with stability during extended stability tests such as Prime95, OCCT, etc. The goal is to use the lowest stable VTT setting.

    Running your most demanding game for several hours is an excellent method of stress testing your system.
    It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it.

    ok i've changed my bios settings for 3.40Ghz
    oh btw when i increased my DRAM voltage to 1.92V, the dram termination, channel A & B reference both increased along with it from 0.900V to 0.9600V. should i leave it as 0.96 or lower it back down to 0.900v?

    The Reference Volt settings are OK as is.
    tRD = 8 or 9 was not manually set for both memory channels. You can make these changes next time, let your Prime95 test continue.
    On your next screen-shot, include the cpuz MAINBOARD screen along with the others.

    It's good to see 3.4Ghz, kimboy. I couldn't get mine stable at that speed even at 1.3500V (I mean survive prime).

    How's your temp?

    BTW, profJim, is PLL necessary in order to successfully OC my CPU?
    I mean, when I tried various settings mentioned earlier, I haven't touched the PLL. Maybe tonight I'll give it another try (reduce VCore and bump PLL up a little bit).

    Absatively, posilutely.....maybe.
    There's no reason to increase CPU PLL with stock or modest overclocks, but tweaking it to 1.57 - 1.61 volts is safe and often required with moderate to high overclocks. Higher than 1.60 volts (for EP45 systems) gets into the "it's safe, no it isn't" debate".
    With my 48% o/c I have ICH I/O and ICH Core set one click higher than stock.
