Exclamation First time overclocking i7 950 with EX-58 extreme help welcome

    First Hi to all,
This is the best forum so far for Gigabyte and I need your help, specially LSDMEASAP if he has some time !
    My configuration :
    CPU: Core i7 950 D0
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EX58 extreme
    BIOS: F7
    Memory: Kingston HyperX 6GB (3x2GB) Intel XMP DDR3 2000MHz CL8 Triple Channel (KHX16000D3ULT1K3/6GX)
    Frequency: 2000 MHz
    Latency: 8-8-8-24 Voltage 1.65V
    Graphics Card: SApphire HD4890 Toxic
Power Supply: Corsair HX 850W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply CMPSU-850HXEU
Cooler: Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 CPU Cooler (Socket LGA1366)
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

This will be my first overclocking on this board so please be patient.
I read and read and read everywhere, on this forum, on many papers, tips to overclock, but to be honest, i'm
quite lost with all the parameters in the bios.
    I would like to overclock my I7 950 to 3,8 Ghz for 24/24 h usage :
What I need from all of you is a table like LSDMEASAP gave us to put the parameters into the bios.
I know that not all boards are the same and mine could vary but i need something to start with.
LDSMEASAP, if you could help me with that, I would be very gratefull.
Many many thanks in advance to all of you.

Yes, of course I've read it already.
It's a nice guide, but i'm afraid i'm lost with all the parameters.
And more, it is for an I7 920 CO, and mine is a I7 950 D0, so it is completely different.

The best for me is to fill my table, and maybe i could start with something.
    LSDMEASAP please help !

920 and 950 are the same, only difference is the available multipliers. 920 and 975 are the same, only better silicon and higher unlocked multi's.

First I DO SUGGEST the latest beta BIOS >>>
    http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/giga...st-bios-28441/

Please read this if you are unsure on how to use Qflash to update your BIOS >>
    http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/bios...h-guide-27576/

    DO NOT USE @BIOS!!

Then try this for 3.8 with ram at 1920 >>>

0X00000050 << Incorrect Memory Timing/Freq or Uncore Multi
    0X00000124 << Incorrect QPI/Vtt Voltage (To Much/Not Enough)
0X00000101 << Not enough Vcore Voltage

    Bi-Directional PROCHOT ..................... [Enabled]

    Uncore & QPI Features:
QPI Link Speed .............................. x36 or x44, start with x36 then you can test x44 later (More QPI/Vtt and or IOH may be needed to run x44, QPI Speed must only be kept under 8GT/s)
Uncore Frequency .......................... 24-26 if using x12 memory multi (Always 2x memory Multi or 2x +1, 2x +2, ect - Higher means more Vdimm often)
    Isonchronous Frequency ..................[Enabled]

    Standard Clock Control:
Base Clock (BCLK) Control ................ [Enabled]
    BCLK Frequency (MHz) ..................... 160 (160 x 23 = 3.68Ghz)
PCI Express Frequency (MHz) ........... [100]

    C.I.A.2 [Disabled]

    Advanced Clock Control:
    CPU Clock Drive ..............................[800mV]
PCI Express Clock Drive ................... [900mV]
    CPU Clock Skew ............................. [0ps]
    IOH Clock Skew ............................. [0ps]

    Advanced DRAM Features:
    Performance Enhance ...................... [Standard]
Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P) ......... [Disabled]
System Memory Multiplier (SPD) ........ [AUTO] << Set 12 for 1920Mhz or 10 for 1600Mhz

Below values may be left in Auto if you like, generally this is fine. For those users who DO Set advanced timings manually, please see some of my thoughts and findings about these settings and rules here

Yes , yes, yes ! ! ! many thanks LSDMEASAP.

I'm going to try your settings, and tell if there is a problem or not (prime95 and Linx).

By the way, could you tell me what is the relationships beetween the different parameters for the memory ?

    Anytime man!!

Good luck, if you have issues please post back the exact settings you try that fail and I will advise back.

What do you mean, about your last question on memory? Did you see the link in the middle of the template, that can help if you are asking about some of the advanced settings.

Sorry my question was not detailed enough :

How do you reach 1920 Mghz ?
    You've said : System Memory Multiplier (SPD) ........ [AUTO] << Set 12 for 1920Mhz or 10 for 1600Mhz.

You multiply 12 by wich value to reach 1920 Mghz ?

Second question : If my config is stable is stable for 3.68Ghz and I will decide to go higher, do i need to raise BCLK first, or CPU Clock Ratio ?
And if i change any one of them, is there some effect to others variables ?

Many thanks again for your help, very much appreciated.

Ahh ok! Sorry for not explaining that just assumed you knew.

Memory Multi x Blck = Ram speed.

    So 12 x 160 = 1920 for example

Well with your CPU you could do either, you could enable turbo for 24, or raise the Bclk. Any combination of those would be fine as well.

If you get your ram stable and like 160 blck and your ram settings, then just raise the CPU multi so you can leave the bclk and other things alone and only need to raise Vcore

Yes, changing Bclk will affect other things, CPU Multi will not. Bclk affect uncore, QPI, and memory

Bclk x uncore multi = Uncore freq (Keep under 4Ghz)

Bclk x QPI multi = QPI Freq (Keep under 8.0GT/s)

Bclk x Ram Multi (SPD) = Mmemory Freq

ah ok, it is less mysterious now with those explanations.

I'm also sure it will help others.

Many thanks and I will get back to you if i have more questions regarding my overclock.

By the way, thanks for reacting so fast.

    Glad I could help!

Ya X58 is a big leap from P35/P45, lost to learn

Anytime, I am here to help and try to get a reply to everyone each day! When I see you are hear and replying I often post back several times if need be.

Good luck on the overclock, post back anytime!
