    Default help please, memory question

    Hello.
I have a quick question regarding memory
I am using this motherboard. GA-8IE2004P-L
    GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - Driver - GA-8IE2004P-L

I would like to upgrade my memory , I currently have 3, 256mb sticks in. and after upgrading windows xp pro to sp2 then sp3 i find some programs work fine until my memory gets used up then stuff freezes. i checked my resources and have only around 250 to 300mbs of ram free. so i assume thats the issue cause my pc worked awesome before i updated the service packs.

I would like to put in a 1gb stick along with keeping 2 of my 256mb in it, for now.

I was wondering if this particular one is compatible? i ask because the manual doesn't list a 1gb stick, only 512

    Wintronic Computers Plus

or would i need to get 2, 512mb sticks?
    Wintronic Computers Plus

    thank you for any help

Yes 512MB will work. The 1GB will work if it is the right configuration. When you use a 1GB module you loose the third slot.
The manual is a little confusing, The reference to unbuffered DDR dimm sizes relates to the individual chips on the DIMM. Therefore a 512 Mbit Dimm with 16 chips would have a total capacity of 8192 Mbit. As there are 8 bits in a byte this gives 1024 MB or 1GB of Ram.
    The allowed combinations for 1GB (512 Mbit double sided) are '16M x 8 x 4 banks' and '8M x 16 x 4 banks'
There are no hidden settings or tricks to using large dimms. The only fall back you have is to enable fail safe defaults in the BIOS with your older memory then install the new memory to see if it boots.
Some manufactures e.g. Kingston quote 64M x 8 with (16M x 8 x 4 bank) in brackets. You need to get the configeration data from the memory supplier in the same terms as the gigabyte manual to check compatability properly.

    thank you for the info!
sorry for being a bother with so many questions lol.

this is the one i will buy Samsung 512MB DDR266/DDR333 PC2100/PC2700 (one for now so the that would give me a total of 1024, if I still have freezing problems i will buy a second one.)

but i dont understand if it has (16M x 8 x 4 bank) ? or if its dual sided.

if i install this one what slot would i install it in. my current memory is all single sided.

Find out you have 2 options here on the 512MB as follows:
    256 Mbit(8Mx8x4 banks)=512MB
    256 Mbit(4Mx16x4 banks)=512MB

so can I install that new 512stick along with my two current 256mb ones?

also if the 512 stick is (8Mx8x4 banks) or(4Mx16x4 banks) will it tell me this on the package? does it matter what slot i install it into?

If you are going to use that module with your modules you will want to check that it is compatable with the 2 modules you are using. You will want to find the numbers on your modules and ask Samsung if they will work together. If I had to guess I would say as long as they are all non ecc, CL3, or CL2.5 that it will work. But I would try to get it all the same for the acception of size. Do you know what is already installed?

The sure way is to take them out and write the numbers down. I have used cpuz1.52 http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/7/...cpuz_152.3.zip or memset4.1 http://www.tweakers.fr/download/MemSet41b4.zip but you will be relying on the program to be accurate.
