Ok guys looks like some of the problem was caused by me as i never read the manual and put memory in wrong location but now sorted into proper slots now and since then it has booted up with the first setting you gave me dbee.

I was coming here to post for newbie help with OCing my rig (in sig) and was stunned to see (as you can see in sig) that the OP has the EXACT SAME SETUP other than my having 12GB of RAM. If you don't mind, I shall be piggybacking on this thread since we should have the same issues and results. Thanks.

What's happening with me is that with Optimized Defaults loaded, the system boots and runs fine. I haven't run Prime 95 yet, but in the little bits of gaming I've done, things look OK and temps are running ~32C on idle and mid-50s under load.

The SpeedStep stuff is messing with me because when I look at CPU-Z, it shows different speeds depending on the system load. When I try using EZ-Tune 6 to bump up to any sort of OC, when I restart the computer it goes thru POST but before the Gigabyte splash screen appears, it sounds like it's shutting down and then restarts. When it comes up, it gives an error that it rebooted due to overclocking or voltage issues and that it's running on defaults.

Drawing from Maximum PC's article on overclocking the 920, I manually set BCLK to 160 and manually set the Patriot timings to 9-9-9-24 - for some reason they auto-detect at 7-7-7-20 and I don't think the voltage is right; a problem I had with my last rig using Corsair XMS2 RAM - and it still barfed. I'm not swinging for the fences, so I don't get what's happening with my setup.

BTW, I have a laptop, so I can check responses here w/o needing the PC operational. Also, I have my old desktop fully working so if it takes a while to shake this box out, I'm not out of business. I built now so I could spend the month prior to Windows 7's release getting the hardware tucked in and testing various software before going live with the retail code.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Thats great Copy! Now you can get some serious OC'ing going ( if ya want ) . Or if your happy with what you currently have which im guessing would be 3.465ghz and 1600mhz on the RAM, then we could try lowering our temps . Im not sure how well your corsair water actually works, but we could lower some voltages for sure.

There are people that do 4ghz on 1.2vcore!! Yea its crazy i know, but thats only with D0 stepping chips and alot of time spent tweaking. I for example require around 1.5vcore and 1.5qpi to be stable at 4ghz.

Dirk, you sure can . No problem man, lets juice you up. Yea my OCZ ram is spec'd at
7 7 7 20 @1333 mhz. It wont do it. My OCZ do 8 8 8 20 @ 1600 , and 9 9 9 24 @ 1750 . If you aint serious overclocking, i would leave the power saving features on . I have several BIOS profiles saved, at 3.465ghz i use the power saving features , but anything over that i turn it off for the profile. It is safe to use 3.8ghz, i have used it myself but it is not recommended by many.

Dirk, DO NOT USE EASY TUNE TO OVERCLOCK! Im not yelling, just being clear lol. You still barfed using 160blck... First thing i see is that with 12GB of ram, it is harder to get keep stable at higher speeds. When your baby barfed on you, did it leave a blue screen with any error codes behind? My first suggestion would be try lowering your Memory multiplier to downclock it a bit. Change the mem multi to 8x to give you 1280mhz, just for now. And up the DRAM voltage to 1.66, i know it turns pink but as long as your RAM voltage is within .5v of the QPI voltage, your safe. Example, if you use 1.66vdimm , you would need at least 1.16qpi. Push that QPI to 1.2v. See if she likes it.

with 12 gb its most likely your ram timings that are causing bsod, try on auto timings and see what bios sets it at also for ocz ram its rated at 1.66 i think corsair is 1.5 ifso set it at that dont leave ram volts on auto as it will overvolt it

Yeah, I've seen the low opinion everyone has of EZ Tune and since I need to get into BIOS to set RAM timings, I shant be playing with it further.

As I posted, I don't even get a complete boot when I have anything cranked up. It starts and sits there for 5-7 seconds and then sounds like it shut down, then restarts and continues normally until it pops a message that it had restarted and it was resetting my speeds and voltages to stock. It's not like I'm BSODing on a Prime95 burn.

Some background: This is the 5th complete rig I've built, but the first in 4 years and I'm bewildered by the new tech and lingo that comes with it. Some of the things you're talking about sound like the teachers on Charlie Brown cartoons here. In the old days OC was basically: put big heat sink on CPU; crank up FSB and voltage; ????; PROFIT! Now it's all terms like QPL and uncore? (Is that like 7-up, the Uncola®?) You're going to have to talk a little more slowly for Rip Van Winkle here. Thank you.

I'm replacing an AMD 3800+ X2 rig that originally bombed out on Prime95 at stock speeds in 13 minutes until I noticed that the RAM timings of the Corsair XMS2 RAM I was using (2-3-3-7) was rated at 1.75V (IIRC) and the default voltage was too low. The reason I'd missed it initially was that the voltage spec was on the web site, not on the box. I'm using these modules and they're speced for 9-9-9-24 @ 1.65V and that is well into the pink numbers in the BIOS.

1.66 is fine its sets it to 1.64 in the bios if you selct 1.66..and if u can get a slightly older copy of cpu-z it doesnt show the processor fluctuate its at a constant ghz speed, best leave eveything on auto exept for ram multi ,ram qpi and cpu voltages

If you read the Maximum PC article, you should have an idea of what QPI is as well as UnCore. QPI is quick path interconnect. To spare you the mumbo jumbo, its the memory controller. Overclocking Ram means u need more QPI. my 6 gigs at 1333 can do with stock QPI voltage , but taking them up to 1750 needs 1.44 qpi voltage.

If you try what we suggest, up the vdimm to 1.66v , lower the mem multi to 8x, change the uncore to 16x or 17x, qpi link speed to 36x, timings at 8 8 8 24 should be fine if your RAM is underclocked to 1280. When you change the memory multiplier, you must change the uncore along with it. The uncore must be twice the mem multi or more. I dont use 12gb of RAM so i cant say this is the problem for sure, but from everything i read and i have read alot, this will be your best bet to start.
So if u use 10x mem multi, you would need 20x or 21x uncore .
8x mem multi you would need 16x or 17x uncore
6x mem multi you would need 12x or 13x uncore.
    you get the picture.

I could almost bet that if you ran on 6gb RAM , you would not have this problem. It would be great if you could use the BIOS template to post exactly what your current failing settings are.

Let me correct myself, memory controller is part of the qpi, all built onto the processor itself. Now i need know i need more coffee. Either way, all that matters and what this means is that all of it is related. Change one thing, it will affect something else and may require you to adjust another setting.

And for those of you who dont know LSDMEASAP on this forum, he's in my opinion the best there is when it comes to the i7.

There are countless posts/threads on here, LSD replying to nearly all of them. He's the gentleman that i learned from , dude is scary good at this stuff.
