Thread: Help me overclock

Much harder to Tweak with 12GB. Dirk, remove half of your RAM and see how it goes, if you dont mind. 46c to 48c idle is not good. I dont even wanna know how hot it got on Load.

Dont forget , you can check the error log file in windows by...
Control Panel to System And Maintainance
In the Problem reports and Solutions - click view problem history. Right click for Problem details. Here are the most common error codes listed below... It will actually say error-bluescreen 101- not enough vcore
124- incorrect QPI voltage-not enough/too much (usually not enough)
    050- incorrect memory timings/settings

pull 6 gigs of that RAM out to start and you'll see the diff.

By the way, you do know that by pressing F11 in the main BIOS page , you can save your BIOS profile , and Load it with F12 this way when it fails and loads defaults, you can just push F12 and pick the BIOS profile. i think like 8 can be saved. However, i would not save a BIOS profile that is this unstable for obvious reasons. I have several saved. Once you find a mild , stable overclock, save it and tweak your head off.

What we need here is somebody with 12GB of RAM that may know of some settings to help stabilize you at 12. For now though i would highly recommend pullin 3 sticks out just so you can find out where your system stands for overclocking , i do believe this is whats in your way.

After you find a nice OC, add the rest of the RAM and see what happens.

I'm going to have to take a break from this for a couple of days due to other commitments that'll keep me away until Tuesday night, but I will be back and starting from scratch.

I removed the TIM that came with the H50 and applied some Arctic Silver II (old, I know) I had on hand. Temps at stock are currently running 3-4C higher than before (lovely), but AS takes a couple of days to set up and temps will drop. Prime95 temps are 62-66C which worries me if I'm hoping to OC and stay in the 70s. [sigh]

Hope y'all will be here later. Thanks for the tips so far.

I'll be back home this evening and may have some time to start banging my head against this issue again. What settings should I start off with, especially voltage and whatnot? Thank you.

OK, I'm finally back with a little time to mess with this and so far it's been nothing but fail for me.

Enter your bios and enable BLCK control
    1. change the blck to from 133 to 160
    2. change the memory multiplier from auto 10x(this gives you your rated 1600mhz ram speed)
    3. change your uncore from auto to 20x or 21x (you'll see where this is at on the main menu)
    4. change your qpi link speed from auto to 36x ( found in same menu as #3)
    5. go to the bottom of the main MIT page to find cpu vcore- change from auto to 1.275 (this should be plenty for this mild overclock)
    6. Qpi voltage may need to be increased - change from auto to 1.3 just for starters ( you could need much more, or much less than this )
    7. Change the dram voltage to 1.64v
    8. Set your memory timings manually (this is also on the main MIT page) not sure what patriot specs are, but i use 8 8 8 24 for 1600mhz , and 9 9 9 24 for 1750 and my RAM is rated for 1333.
Using these settings gets me nothing but a double-pump bootup and error message about overclocking and/or voltage. From these settings I've tried:

    * Set BCLK to 150
    * Dropped CPU multiplier to 19x
    * Upped RAM timing to 10-10-10-24
    * Bumped DRAM voltage to 1.66v
    * Tried a little more voltage on QPI and CPU

I don't get it. I'm not pressing anything hard and it's not like I've got shoddy components and the only success I've had with OCing is the Gigabyte 4GHz steps which will boot and then blow up on Prime95. I'm either overlooking something really simple and silly or I'm screwed and doomed to run at default, thus mooting all the performance parts. Too bad the OP abandoned his own thread the moment he succeeded.

While I'd like to get the 3.8-4GHz speeds so many other D0 stepping users seem to get with ease, I wouldn't cry if I topped out at 3.66GHz. The fact that underclocked RAM and 3GHz is a no-go sucks. Now what?

first read on how to update bios using q-flash update to the latest one and then load optimized defaults and try again, also set you ram timings all on auto for now except ram volts set that at 1.66

Will do. I've flashed the BIOS this way before, but I didn't see the new BIOS had been released. Thanks.

when youve done that, enter these settings into the bios leave everything else turned on or on auto for now......set multi to give you your rated or close to but not over ram mhz speed, set cpu voltage to normal, set qpi voltage to 1.28000,set performance enhance to standard and set ram voltage to 1.66 then boot and see if you have any luck if not post back and ill tell you what to tweak, also i forgot set bclk to 180

No joy. :( Flashed to F9e BIOS, loaded Optimized defaults and plugged in all settings you gave - QPI voltage only went to 1.27500, then was 1.29500 - and after restart it hung at initial power-on with fans running at max for 30 seconds or so before I hit the reset button. Then it came up with my familiar friend, the overclocking error screen. [bangs head on desk]
