    Default Can I do that?

please forgive my lack of knowledge of computer building. I have a basic understanding of what most the hardware does but I dove into uncharted waters yesterday and pretty much drowned. I will try to describe my issue as best I can.

The computer I started with is a gateway Gateway Support - Specifications

I received the rare qx9750 from a freind who's only request was to use and not sell. absolutely no problem, why sell something he gave me for free anyway. I'd rather upgrade and enjoy it. I bought a GA-EP45-UD3L. I am trying to use my existing hard drive, and 4G of ddr2(667Mhz) ram I had in old mo-bo. When I turn it on it wont load windows. It displays the mo-bo screen for about 5 secs, then goes to a boot screen. sometimes gets stuck there. or a couple times gave me the "windows was not shut down properly" message. when i hit enter to start normally, it wont fully load. just ends up at an everlasting black screen. my question is, will a mother board/proccessor swap be plug and play? or do I have to do something else?

What is this processor FSB? There might be a problem if it's 400(rated 1600) with your DDR-667 as the lowest poossible multiplier is 2 and will result in DDR-800 settings.

You may try and under clock the CPU by entering BIOS MIT section and set CPU Host Frequency to 333. If memory Frequency does not change to 667 on the right side set multiplier to 2.00B manually. Also set Performance Enhance to Standard.

As for windows it is likely not work on the new board, Search google for replacing motherboad windows, for the procedure of migrating windows to a different board.

finding exact specs on the processor I found to be difficult as it was never a public realease. I read some say it was 1333, and some that said 1600.

When you boot press del to enter BIOS setup, then enter the MIT section, you'll see what the CPU Host Frequency is set to, 333 is 1333 and 400 is 1600, might also be a problem if it's not official and not supported by the BIOS.
Also see hwat memory frequency is set to, the number on the right.

a copy of windows from another pc wont work on a new pc or diff motherboard, its due to having all different drivers loaded into windows for the original motherboard, you can make it work if your a whizz at deleting drivers and installing new ones but its a long winded process, best thing to do is do a fresh clean install of windows.....windows 7 beta is free atm till may 2010

looks like the original 2G of ram were 533 Mhz. I removed those and now have just the 2G that i bought which are 667. That allowed windows to load. from there I just let cd do the work for the drivers. seems good to go at the moment.

ty for the time and input guys.
