    Default EP45-DS4 + E8600 Help needed to optimize Bios

    Hey,

    I have swiched my E8400 with an E8600, nothing else, but my system will not clock higher than before :-(
    Infact it is a bit worse, in regards of fsb speed, so my ram runs slower than before.
    Have almost tried everything, but i'm stuck now.

    Idle Temp are allways 35 degrees both cores, seemes like they can't go lower, but they can go up. max temps I have had is 47 degree both cores.

    Erlier with my E8400 I could easy run 8x500 fsb with my ram, so I know it's not there the problem lies.

    I have read that everybody else can run at least 4.5Ghz with the E8600, what can I do ?

    Have you tried higher FSB with lower CPU ratio?
    I suggest you leave advanced timings on auto as you try to increase FSB, I'd leave the standard on auto myself. Also Set Performance Eanhance to standard while you in progress of increasing FSB and set higher Static tRead Value.
    You may have to re-tune Vtt and CPU Refs as well.

    I have read that wolfdales love the 8 multiplier (and less) but 9, 9.5, and 10 up the voltages.

    tRFC of 42! Wow. Mine won't boot at that. Yeah, what Chike said, loosen off the ram while you're chasing fsb. I don't know enough to recommend voltages 4 yr board, but will follow the thread. I've got the E8500 on an x48, and it's getting difficult at 9.5x445. Stable at 4.1 but shaky at 4.2GHz. Your newer board should be able to do a little better.

    Soon as I got above 1.35v cpu temperatures ramped up.

    I'd change graphics boost turbo to auto, and use pci 100 till overclock stable.

    I don't know where you read this, but you'd be lucky to get 4.5GHz on any E8xxx short of being extremely lucky with getting an excellent chip or water cooling. There really isn't much in it between a E8400 and E8600 if both are the later E0 stepping. It's certainly not worth upgrading from one to the other.

    2x1Gb will be absolutely fine with a tRFC of 42. That's actually relatively loose for 2Gb of RAM.

    Try different levels of MCH ref (0.70V to 0.780V at 1.2V CPU termination), more PLL up to 1.61V, more CPU Termination etc. There's no real reason why your E8600 should automatically need the same/less voltage. Every CPU varies and you could very well have "upgraded" from a very good E8400 to an average E8600.

    Thank you very much for your post, with some new good information on my quest for stable OC
    My E8400 was old core C0, there fore I thought that it would clock higher.

    Could it be that my beloved mobo is not good at OC ?
    Would it have any OC improvements to flash bios from F7 to F9 or (Beta F10a) ?

    Prime95 load max temps are 51 degrees celcius both cores, and vcore drops to ~ 1.344v in windows

    Hey Salty,

    Yes, there is no chance to up the mutiplier, system wont boot :-(

    - Is it my mobo, thats lagging?
    - Do you think a bios update can get the speed up?

    - I bought this paticular E8600 from a guy, that has the Asus Maximus II Formula, and he could run 10x430fsb on only 1.24v

    - Why is it that the GA-EP45-UD3P can not be bought anymore?

    Anyone else have som idears ?

    I would not use any turbo settings, esp. for memory, when overclocking. That's me.

    At 460fsb 2.00B I am on tRD of 10, but using older x48-dq6
    Your cpu voltage and vtt is higher than mine. Is your e8500 an EO? If so should need less volts than CO.

    If the higher tRD is needed you are not going to notice much difference in performance from a lower clock that didn't. Not booting at all gives no performance anyway. Don't be reluctant to try higher tRD.

    E8600 Results
    Our maximum overclock on air-cooling with the E8600 came with a blistering 4.40GHz clock speed at a fully stable 550MHz FSB rate. Our 4GB G.Skill memory kit allowed us to reach DDR2-1100 at 5-5-5-18 settings. We used the following voltage settings: 1.40V NB, 1.36V VTT, 1.72V PLL, 2.08V VDimm, and 1.500V for the CPU. We had to drop to 8x500 to get 8GB stable while keeping VDimm below 2.1V, PLL below 1.80V, and NB below 1.50V. Vdroop was approximately -.01V with Load Line Calibration (LLC) enabled and -.025V with it disabled at idle. Under load Vdroop was -.02V with LLC enabled and -.04V with it disabled.

    E8600 Additional Results
    We knew we had a good E8600, so we pulled out our CoolIT Systems Freezone Elite kit and decided to see how far we could get on this board. We ended up at 5GHz with a 10x CPU multiplier and FSB set to 500. We installed 8GB of memory and ran it at DDR2-1000 with 5-5-5-15 timings. We used the following voltage settings: 1.42V NB, 1.40V VTT, 1.76V PLL, 2.04V VDimm, and 1.5675V (1.550V was stable after raising NB to 1.46V) for the CPU. This is the first time we have reached a stable 5GHz with this processor in a P45 board. Vdroop was similar to our results above.

    Correction, I have a E8600 (allways E0)
    I know your mobo is a x48 :-)
    I just add. the turbo after my system was stable, to get some better performance in memory bench. I dont have it on while overclocking.
    BTW. my current mobo is the GA-EP45-DS4, and dont know if it can clock higher ?
