    Default GA-EP45 UD3P w/ Q9550 & 8GB DDR2 1066

I'm new at overclocking and I had to spend several days just getting my ram stable. I've tried overclocking the CPU using the Easy Tune utility and making bios changes myself...3.4 ghz @ 1.275v, 3.8 ghz @ 1.3625, etc. etc.
so far all blue screens when i try to OC the CPU.

I would appreciate any suggestions.....I'm not looking for anything beyond 3.8 ghz for now....maybe later.

There are a few posts on the Q9550 currently showing, and a number of older ones. NimrodAUS has had no luck at all with his while others comfortably go to 3.8GHz.

I'd suggest reading some of the other 9550 posts asking much the same question.

8 gig of ram. That usually means more mch voltage before you start, and probably a lesser final overclock as a result. 2 x 1 gig gives "fastest" OC, if GHz is sole consideration.

Many systems can't run 8GB of memory at its full rated speed.
Some manufactures state on their websites that rated speeds are only guaranteed when using 2x2GB of memory.
You will probably be able to run your memory at 900 - 1000+ speeds.

If you loaded Optimized bios settings before you started tweaking you're good to go.
Do not use ET6 for overclocking, make all changes manually.
Please post a link to the full specifications of your ram.

With your posted stock settings, change the following:

    System Memory Multiplier -------------- : [2.4B] <-- set to 2.00B for now
Advanced Timing Control <-- set all to AUTO for now
DRAM Voltage ------------ 1.800 -------- : [Auto] <-- set to 2.02 volts or the highest rated voltage for your ram

    Advanced Settings
Limit CPUID Max. to 3 ------------------ : [Disabled]
    No-Execute Memory Protect -------------- : [Enabled]
CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E) ---------------- : [Enabled] <-- set to disabled while overclocking
    C2/C2E State Support ------------------- : [Disabled]
    x C4/C4E State Support ----------------- : [Disabled]
    CPU Thermal Monitor 2 (TM2) ------------ : [Enabled]
CPU EIST Function ---------------------- : [Enabled]
<-- set to disabled while overclocking
    Virtualization Technology -------------- : [Disabled]

    Integrated Peripherals
Legacy USB Storage Detect -------------- : [Enabled]
<-- set to disabled while overclocking (this sometimes causes problems)

Which bios version are you using?
In your next post, include a screen-shot that shows:
Memset using the SPD and ">>" tabs
cpu-z CPU and Mainboard screens (several instances can be run at the same time)
EasyTune6 --> TUNER tab --> ADVANCE tab --> VOLTAGE tab (only the Voltage tab is needed)

This is an example of the screen-shot (with several extra cpuz screens).

Have you tested your memory at stock settings using Memtest86+ (v2.11) for at least 8 - 12 passes?
Have you run an extended stress test using Prime95, OCCT, or Orthos for at least 8 - 12 hours?

Links to download these programs are found in the Latest Overclocking Programs, System Info, Benchmarking, & Stability Tools thread.

    Thanks for the replys

    Yes, I did.

    G.SKILL-Products

    Bios is FA

I have run memtest (4 instances) for around 2 hours with no errors.

Haven't run any of the others as I've not gotten anywhere with OC'ing the CPU

I'll apply the changes you pointed out and post again with the screenshots you asked for.

Yes try the suggest profjim has suggest. You might want to try removing 2 of the stick first and get every thing stable first then try adding in the other 2. If you can get them stable at stock speed your probably gonna need alot of voltage on the Mch that may limit you on how far you can O.C your cpu if you are gonna try and do that.

It's best to perform extended stability tests even if you are using non-overclocked settings.
Any number of hardware incompatibilities can happen, even with brand new components.
Memory and psu incompatibilities are the two most common problems.

Trying to overclock a system that isn't completely stable at stock settings is an exercise in frustration and will waste a lot of your time.

Unless there is some reason u really need 8gb go with 4..UNLESS you bought a matched 8G set from gskill.

They have taken 2 sets of 4 gb back for a matched 8gb set (in some post waaaay back here ..n no im not gonna look for the link),
Even then you may not get the cpu performance you would get with 4gb.

    Check thru posts by "Conners".
He has done the modt extensive testing ive seen in this forum on 9950 and UD3P(with 4G)

Me personally .ive done 8 gb tests with 667mhz Samsung value ram and my 800mhz gskills.
With both sets in I can go like 360 fsb with cpu at 7x.
667 only in it goes like 380 fsb (760 ram)
800mhz in alone it goes 980-1000mhz(see sig)

If I had 2 sets of 2 x2gb 800mhz gskill sticks,id expect in and around 850-900mhz while overclocking the cpu/
If it was 4 matched 800mhz sticks,id expect around 900-925mhz,while ocling the cpu.

4 unmatched 1066mhz sticks might go 1066 mhz-1100mhz depending ,4 matched sticks id think 1100-1150,with cpu not far off standard speed ..using a multiplier on the ram.

This probably isnt very clear but unless u need the 8GB, and you want to overclock your cpu,you may get more overall performance with just 4Gb.

    Default Re: GA-EP45 UD3P w/ Q9550 & 8GB DDR2 1066

I have to disagree with MCH Core = 1.40, even with 8GB or memory.
Settings above 1.32 volts are often needed when running with extreme memory speeds, such as trying to run 1066 memory at 1200MHz or higher.

MCH Core = 1.28 - 1.32 will probably work fine. Higher is not necessarily better.
