Default UD5, new i7 OC ram timings problems

Hello there, im new to this forum but i'm really in need of i7 expert advice.

    Heres my story :

FYI : Here's my rig (i'll updage my signature later :p)

    CPU : Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping Quad Core Processor LGA1366 2.66GHZ Bloomfield 8MB
    Motherboard : GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5
    RAM : OCZ XTC Platinum OCZ3P1333LV6GK DDR3-1333 6GB 3X2GB CL7-7-7-20 Triple Channel Memory Kit DDR3
PSU : CORSAIR CMPSU-620HX 620W ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply
CASING : Cooler Master HAF 932
    Heatsink : Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 LGA1366 i7 Heatpipe Cooler

    -----

I've recieve my new rig and i've been playing with it since the last few days.

With my chip to reach 4.0 Ghz i've come to the fact that it would need more than 1.3 volt to get it stable.

Since it's a computer that will be ON most of the time (24/7) i want the more reliable overclock possible. (I like overlocking, but not at the cost of high overvoltage dose)

So i've look for a way to reach 3.8 Ghz with the minimum voltage i could to be stable.

After a lot of try&reboot i've come to achieve a rock stable overclock of 3.8Ghz with less than 1.15 volt :) Temps under full load are realy good too when i compare with others i7 920 OC of 3.8 i found on the net.
    [181 x 20, HT ON, TURBO ON, QPI MULTI X 20, UNCORE MULTI X 17]

Mission accomplished ? Well, not completly.

My RAM is rated at 1333, and right now i got it running (in my actual overclock) with a mem multi x6, wich gives DDR3-1086 speed at 6.64v

Here begin another quest to reach higher mem frequency without many modifications to my CPU/QPI overlock.

After some tweaking i'm running now with a x8 mem (DDR-1448) , but with lower timings of 8-8-8-21.

Seems stable but i didnt run any windows benchtest atm.

Here's a weird trick... maybe someone will find a way to make me 7-7-7-21 with it :

If i try to boot from "cold" (computer is off, press power button, starting...) it wont boot (or post, i cant make it to the bios screen) with memory settings of 7-7-7-21.

Then, i tried someting weird, and it worked : I started the computer with 8-8-8-21 settings, then on boot i go into the bios, change the timings for 7-7-7-21, save & exit and since i didnt play with voltage the computer dont stop itself, it stay ON and it boot again at 7-7-7-21, and its working ! , it pass memtest 45 mins, and if i dont start memtest and go into windows it will boot.

But after a memtest when i hit escape and the computer turns off before a reboot, it wont boot again.

It's like if there's something that isnt enough for the computer to boot from cold state but once power is in i can go 7-7-7-21 without any problemes, i just cant turn the power off.

Any idea ? =/ Since 7-7-7 seems to work (memtest at least) i would like to investigate further but if i cant reboot i'll forget about it. And if i can't make it the question is what is better : DDR-1088 at 7-7-7-19 or DDR-1448 at 8-8-8-21 :(

Ok here's the result of my last bunch of tests to make my ram settings 7-7-7 to boot from cold state at DDR-1448

with as a base all of my existant bios settings (7-7-7-21), i changed :

VDIMM -> upped to 1.70 (was at 1.66)
VTT volt -> upped to 1.3 (was at 1.21)

Won't boot from cold state :(

Then i tried to change (with all the modifications above) :
Turn off CPU TURBO BOOST -> Won't boot from cold state.
Turn off CPU ENHENCCEMENT HALT too -> Won't boot from cold state.

The i tried will all those settings to change 21 to 22 in the mem timings, wont boot from cold state too.

    Lastly i tried :
VDIMM -> upped to 1.75 (was at 1.70)

Wont boot from cold state too :(

so, atm im stuck at 8-8-8-21 if i want DDR-1448 to boot from cold state.

I did my best to provide as much information as i could, now any help is welcome, great forum btw !

you havnt told us qpi voltage, and dont take your ram any higher than 1.66 as it will damage it,have you disabled c1e enhanced halt state?

Update : I've tried to bench my setup with DDR-1488 8-8-8-21 to see if it was at least stable like with my DDR-1088 settings.

Failed my LinX test after 5 runs, im pretty sure its related to the ram since it was doing 20 long run with my DDR-1088 7-7-7-19 settings :(

Gonna try again with more juice (im at 1.66v VDIM right now) later on with any other tips i'll receive until then.

my QPI/VTT voltage is at 1.21v with my DDR-1088 stable setup.

And for my try with DDR-1448 it was done with 1.30v. I said it in one previous post (i was talking about VTT, but its QPI/VTT voltage in fact).

As for CPU ENHENCCEMENT HALT :

Turn off CPU ENHENCCEMENT HALT too -> Won't boot from cold state.
    Didn't change anything :(

And for the test i did with > 1.66v VDIM, it was only for a quick test to see if it would pass the boot state and show the bios screen, didnt change anything so i went back to 1.66, but for my DDR-1088 stable setup my VDIM is at 1.62 (wich is normal i presume since 1088 is underclocked).

i dont understand,do you keep c1e on or off??? also i would raise qpi volt to 1.26 or 1.28 as it needs more for 3.8

CPU ENHENCCEMENT HALT (c1e) was ON for my DDR-1088 7-7-7-19 test, which was rock stable.

I tried disabling it in my try to make DDR-1448 7-7-7-21 to boot, and it didn't change anything, it wont boot.

and you use 1.136 full load? im using 1.120 full load in prime 95 but i have cpu voltage set to normal and everything enabled in advanced cpu features c1e ect, what fans are you using with your noctua your load temps are unusualy low

you need to loosen timings i dont think youl run @1448 with those timings try 7-7-7-24 or 28 if not maybe 8-8-8-24 my ocz ram wont go any tighter and i have cas8 1800mhz

The noctua heatsink comes with two noctua P12 (NCIX.com - Buy Noctua NF-P12-1300 120MM Ultra Quiet Cooling Fan 1100-1300RPM 63-92M3/H 12.6-19.8DBA Molex - NF-P12-1300 In Canada.) wich are i think the best 120mm fan atm (if you can deal with the weird color :P) Its set in PUSH/PULL position.

My casing have 3 x 230mm fans and 1x140mm rear exaust fan, i added another Noctua P12 120mm intake fan at the bottom, air flow in the case is simply amasing lol

I'll try to lose timings like you said :)
