My Bad. The 1066 Kingston is DDR2.

    Just tried running:
    NB Volt Control +0.2V (1.300V)
    NB VID Control +0.05V (1.2500V)

Both were two notches above standard. Same problem.

Tried holding in reset til the drives powered....same problem.

About to unplug all drives & try that. Then I'll log in & CPU-z report!

This is abviousely not a driver related issue since the BIOS screen is garbled.
Do you have an older graphics card to test with?

EDIT: does it happen with every cold boot, even if the machine was on for a while and shut down and re-booted?
Took ALL the drives out, all the fans except the CPU fan....same problem.

Yes, it happens on EVERY cold boot. I had it on for nearly 24hrs (I know that's not advisable), shut it down, waited 10 seconds, rebooted to the same problem! Hit reset switch, and it's fixed!

No matter what I try, I get the same outcome every time. Cold boot - garbled. Reset switch - fine.

Tried Alt-F12 to flash the bios - only took me to the boot screen. "End" was the Flash bios option and the only option I had there was save to or load from disk - being the floppy! I had no option to update the backup bios, but I have confirmed I have F5i which to my knowledge - referencing the Gigabyte website - is the latest bios for this mobo.

Haven't been able to find any confirmation with either Gigabyte or XFX regarding compatibility or conflict issues with these two products.

I just remembered that I had some error beeps once soon after my system drive crashed last week. Two long and one short beep. Couldn't find information on that one anywhere. It was just after I'd unseated the RAM, and I may not have reseated it properly though.

    Here is my report:

XFX have responded with a generic (we think your GPU has issues) but want me to register it first before they continue.

I'd prefer to avoid an RMA simply because the OP stated he had a mobo/GPU conflict & I can't be assed waiting around a couple of weeks or whatever to get another card displaying the same problems.

If I register the card, will it make it harder for me to go back to my supplier later today (I'm in Australia remember) and replace it with a different brand, or make of the 6850?

I'm going to dump the battery out of this thing for half an hour and see what that does.

    Cheers guys.

    NO DICE!

Left the battery out for 30mins and all I got was a reset clock....same problem!

I'm taking the whole PC back to my supplier now who reckon it's a faulty card. I said I want it tested before I leave or I'll be going back and forth for eternity.

    Fingers crossed lads.

Reckon I might be dumping AMD cards after this....

XFX6850 - Garbled every cold boot - perfect every reset
HD4870 - Perfect every time (though it freaked out a bit on OS boot when I just tested it - probably due to a software conflict with the latest CCC drivers - took about 30sec to refresh to 1680x1050)
    Onboard - perfect every time.

you can download driversweeper for free and clean out all your ati drivers, could be corrupted, still could be your original guess too of your psu,but if its not crashing in games then i doubt it to be that, not too keen on xfx either, they might be good cards and you might have picked up a duff one but i prefer sapphire cards just my opinion, try and rma your card then and see if a replacement fixes it cant be the mb or it would do it with onboard graphics same for ram, could be bios issue with your gpu, or gpu itself or psu

    I'm a f***en retard!!!

Sorry for wasting your time guys - but I'd literally put a dozen hours into it before I posted here.

    The 6850 wasn't mounted properly.

The card being as wide as it is rendered the black clips on the case useless. I didn't think of that as the card physically *clicked* when I put it in the mb. The dude at the shop put a screw in it, booted it, perfect.

I feel like such a retard. 20hrs wasted! Learnt heaps of stuff though. I may aswell OC it now! =)

Who wants to punch me in the face? Take a number & get in line =)

    A thought.....

I really hope the OP didn't have the same issue - I can't remember off hand if he replaced his mb or GPU. If it was the GPU he could easily have inadvertently had a similar mount issue (though really, who is *that* retarded?)

He went through a whollllle lotta sh*t and RMA's before he got his sorted.

Thanks again for your help guys. I guess I'm not out of the woods yet as I haven't tested it at home. Guess it only leave my monitor. But that'd mean my TV is in conflict too. About as unlikely as an idiot not mounting his GPU properly I reckon! =)
