Intel specifies a maximum of 1.35V for the QPI, so up to this is a definite go. Personally I don't see much harm doing 1.375-1.4V if that's what you need to run the RAM at its rated speed. Seting VDIMM to 1.70V also won't break anything. If it's needed, then it's needed. OFC, always use the least voltage you can, but with 12GB to get stable, things can get tricky.

Yes, you should manually set everythng. Timings, SMM, VDIMM and QPI. Change DRAM Timing Selectable (SPD) to manual and set 8-8-8-24. Set a 1.35V QPI and a SMM of 12. Now see if you have stabilitl. If not I'd increase VDIMM to what ever the mid point between 1.66V and 1.7V is, then try again. If nothing, go to 1.7V VDIMM. Again, if nothing, raise QPI up a notch etc etc.

Make your mind up after reading some articles on how much QPI and VDIMM is your maximum and stick to it. Hopefuly you'll become stable before you reach the max you're willing to use. Also hopefully 12GB won't turn out to be more trouble than it's worth. For heavy duty professional work I can understand 12Gb (Auto CAD, Monster 1080p editing/encoding etc), but for anything else, 12GB actually is more trouble than it's worth.

Set 'System Memory Multiplier (SPP)' to 10.0 setting freq to 1333
Kept 'DRAM Timing Selectable (SPD)' on Auto
    'QPI/Vtt Voltage' to 1.255
    'DRAM Voltage' to 1.66

Do I have to manually set the timings?
thats cos timings are on auto,if you manually set them it might not run at 8-8-8-24 timings dont make so much difference as faster mhz speed you can try if you want but it might blue screen 9-9-9-24 you wont notice any difference

The modules are rated for 8-8-8-24, so it would be a good idea to try that first. If it's not stable then sure, 9-9-9-27 is an option at 1600, but I still believe it's a QPI and VDIMM issue. The RAM should definitely be capable of CAS 8 at 1333, even with 12GB.

Thanks to you both for your suggestions. Being pretty new to this I'm a little nervous about doing all this manually and risking shortening the life of any components. So I decided, based on a couple of posts on the Corsair support forum, to swap out the 2 6gb kits for a single 12Gb 1600 kit first before I attempt to do something I don't understand!

It arrives in a couple of days. I'll let you know.

For what it's worth, the RAM finally arrived. Glad I swapped out the 2 x 6GB 1600 kits for a single 12GB 1600. All works as should. I just enabled the XMP option in the bios and all worked. Glad I didn't have to stuff around with manual settings I don't understand. The only catch was I could only get a C9 12GB 1600 kit rather than a C8, but I can live with that.

Thanks to all for your suggestions

    Cheers - Brett
