    Question First time i7 920 OCing with X58 UD3R SLI

    First of all i would like to say hi to all members of this forum...

    im new to oc ing.. just learned a bit of OC ing with my last Q6600.. not that good anyway.. :p

    i just builded a new rig. i want to learn to OC ing the i7 920 for daily uses (gaming, working and browsing) and so far. .after an extended and prolonged googling.. i think this forum's Gigabyte is the best there is.
    and i need your help to OC ing my new rig.. especially for LSDMEASAP if he could spend some time for me !

    My Rig configuration :
    CPU: Core i7 920 D0
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EX58 UD3R - SLI (Rev 1.0)
    BIOS: F6d
    Memory: Gskill 4 GB kit (2 x 2 GB) DDR3 1600 PC3 12800 (F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ)
    Frequency: 1600 MHz
    Latency: 9-9-9-24 Voltage 1.5 ~ 1.6 V
    Graphics Card: Eagle HD4890
    Power Supply: Corsair TX 850W
    Cooler: "old" Thermalright IFX 14 with 1366 IFX14 retention kit. Push pull configuration fan (TT Smart fan 12 cm - CM 12 cm fan 90 CFM)
    OS: Windows vista Ultimate 64-bit
    ambient temperature in my room was usualy around 27 - 28 C.. without any air conditioning..

    after reading a few overclocking forum.. i couldn't find a good explanation how to OC with my board..
    i have been trying to OC my CPU for a few days now. i would like to OC my i7 920 to daily 3.8 or 4.0 Ghz

    with LSDMEASP's BIOS template i will give the description of my BIOS.. the one with the question mark "??" show that i dont exactly remember the setting..

    right now my setting could put me in 3.990 (190 x 21) MHz with 1.31875v (BIOS). below here i tried to do a few stability test..

    - but after 26 minutes of Prime 95..one of the thread was FAILED. with max full load temperature was 78C. although while on idle was 40C..
    i tried once with the same setting but after 37 minutes. my computer went BSOD. im sorry i dont know the BSOD code... i just learned the code from this forum before i wrote this thread.

    - with OCCT 3.1 CPU test (LINpack HT on, 64 bit).. it failed the test after 4 minutes only :(

    - with 3D Mark 06 CPU test and 3D Mark Vantage CPU test. my setting succeded complete both of the CPU test.. score 24k for 3dmark vantage CPU test but it only score 7716 for the 3dMark06 CPU test.

    my questions are:

    1. was it to hot for my rig to have 79 C temperature ?
    2. was my Bios setting optimize enough to have daily 4.0 ghz?
    3. why i failed the stability test (Prime 95, OCCT linpack) ?
    4. why my CPU test score was very low in 3dMark 06? was it due to "turbo throttling"?

    if anyone could help me with these questions , I would be very gratefull. especally for LDSMEASAP

    79c is a bit too hot
    heres a quick set up for 3.8ghz only set what i tell you to and leave everything else enabled or on auto,set cpu volt to normal qpi voltage to 1.28000 ram multi to give you as close to 1600mhz but not over ram voltage to 1.66,in advanced cpu features leave everything enabled....you should be good for 3.8ghz which is plenty fast enuff and really you need a better cpu cooler for higher overclocks.set ram timings on rated 9-9-9-24 anything else might cause crashes

    For daily use on air I wouldnt go as high as 3.9 or whatever. 3.6 maybe 3.8 if you can keep the temps down and the volts. But Im no expert on I7 im sure LSDMEASAP will be along shortly to fine tune your settings. ITs good to see a newbie get all the information up in the first post.

    Im interested in this overclock myself as I will be building a system for a friend with this board and chip shortly so I need to learn how to give the I7 a nice mild overclock.

    you say you have 4gb kit installed? is it tripple channel or another type? as if your running dual channel it might cause problems when overclocking high

    I thought the IFX 14 was a very good cooler, comparable to TRUE and Noctua, and very capable of 4.0 + .

    LSDMEASAP has not been seen in a while. Anybody have any idea what happened to hi?

    i thought so too... from many forum and review, they concluded that IFX 14 is still one of the best air cooler for i7... maybe i applied the TIM (NOCTUA TIM) in a wrong way... a little bit too much.. maybe...

    i put the cooler in horizontal position. with push pull fan configuration.. and outlet to the back of the chassis.. the 12 cm TT fan as the inlet and the 12cm CM fan as the outlet..

    Is there any suggestion for the cooler and fan emplacement? or should i buy a new fan to make 3 x fan push pull configuration?

    yups.. i only used 4GB kit in dual channel setting (2 x 2 GB).. will it a problem during daily uses? or overclocking maybe? coz from the UD3R manual's, there are an explanation about the dual channel memory setting....

    actually i planned to build a i5 rig (1156 socket)... so i bought the memory beforehand.. but later on.. i changed my mind and build a i7 920 rig (1366 socket) instead.. with an extra cash of course.. :D and right now im still trying compile enough cash to buy a triple channel 6 GB kit later..

    yes... its a bit too hot for me... but from the other forum i read before. there as a i7 920 D0 4Ghz and air cooler (Sycthe Mugen 2) could reach only 71 degrees Celcius max during Linpack test (OCCT 3.1 - 1 hour test) .. with a Nidech 3A fan though...

    while we were still at the temperature topic... i still curious about the recommended temperature for i7... what is the max temperature for daily uses that wont damage the proc?

    thx for the BIOS Setting bro... i will put it on my BIOS after i got home from this weekend.. i will report it to you after that.... thx...

    hehehehehehe.. it's just my curiosity to know whether i could reach the 4Ghz barrier or not. there are a lot of i7 920 D0 that could reach 3.6 - 3.8 Ghz with a default vcore...
    maybe for daly uses i will stick to the 3.6 - 3.8 Ghz...

    hi all..

    i tried to tweak my BIOS setting...

    i increase my Vcore to 1.325v (BIOS) to perform 3990 Hz (190 x 21)..

    n it turns out pretty well... it stabilized..

    i passed the 1 hour prime 95.. with max temp was 75.. idle temp 40...

    i will post my BIOS setting later on..

    Welcome, Here are my settings for a stable 3.8oc on my system I hope will work for you. I'm sure you will not have to use as much voltage as me though because you have a D0 stepping chip opposed to my C0.
