Default Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 12GB memory problem

I intially built my Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 / i7 920 with a Corsair TR3X6G1600C8D Dominator 6 GB 3 x 2 GB PC3-12800 1600MHz 240-Pin DDR3 Core i7 Memory Kit. Loaded optimized defaults and set XMS profile 1 in the BIOS (f9e). Installed win7-64 RC and everything worked great for weeks.

I then added an additional 6GB of the same memory for a total of 12GB. Immediately started getting BSODs with things like memory_management. Got a couple Memtest86 errors. Pulled out the new memory and Memtest86 made 16 passes without error on the original 6GB.

Exchanged the apparently bad memory at Fry's and got three new ones. Same problem, BSOD & three Memtest86 errors in test 5, pass 8.

Seems really strange that two sets of memory in a row would be bad. Just bad luck or is it something else? Is this board capable of 12GB @ XMS Profile 1?

Thanks for any help you can give.

what voltages and speed and timings do the xmp set it at?? try disabling xmp and manually set ram timings to spec and rated speed and set voltage to 1.66 in the bios, also raise qpi/vtt voltage to 1.260000

have you check the failing set on its own? does it generate errors then?

It may not be directly applicable but using the EX58 Extreme board I could only get it to work with 12GB under Windows 7 using the normal profile, using the XMS Profile 1 caused a BSOD.

you will need to run memory at it's defaut speed 1333 for 12 gigs of ram
you will still need to set votage 1.64

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I ultimately returned the memory because I had to choose between running 6GB@1600 or 12GB@1333. The system was noticably faster with 6GB@1600 and since the whole purpose of more memory was improved performance, it was an easy choice.

you would have run 12gb faster than 1333mhz by disabling xmp and manually setting multi/qpi/ram voltage 1400-1600mhz would have been achievable

I disabled xmp and set everything manually in an attempt to run 12GB@1600. The BIOS only allowed 1.64/1.34 voltage settings since the 1.65/1.35 voltage settings were grayed out. I could have selected 1.66 but was afraid of frying the memory. Unfortunately, even though the 1.64/1.34 voltage settings were allowed, when the settings were saved and the system rebooted, the settings I entered were discarded and stock settings (1066, etc.) were used. When that happened I re-entered the BIOS and got some error about over voltages being overriddened.

Lower voltages for 1600 were accepted but the system was not stable and I repeatedly got BSODs.

Also I noticed in the Gigabyte memory support list that there was no entry for 12GB@1600.

Definitely a learning experience for me but I tried many many combinations and couldn't find any that worked or worked reliably. If there is anyone out there with this exact memory and MB, I'd love to hear how they got 12GB@1600 to run stabily.

you have to select 1.66 in the bios, dont worry it actually uses 1.64 volts but you have to select 1.66 as it doesnt have the option for 1.65 trust me ive been running my ram faultlessly on 1.66,and you need that voltage to make it stable
