    XMP = eXtreme Memory Performance.

Psycho; What if he installed on one 2 GB stick, loaded all drivers and apps, and then tried more ram? Just thinking that would take the ram out of the bad install equation. (?)

    Nice specs. Lucky Grandson.

yeh use 1 stick for install see how it goes.
It doesnt really matter if you do or dont use 1 or 4 sticks for installation, just if you want to be sure a memory problem isnt affecting installation.
Ive had a mix of gskill and samsung "value" 667 ram running in my board for 8G trying the gskill in both slots 1+3 and 2+4,the bios automatically"dumbed down" to the lower spec ram.
Obviously I loaded and saved optimised defaults before turning off the pc to change sticks around.
I had already installed Vista 32 on the hdd on another giga board .
I upgraded to 64 bit version on my present board(I recieved both 32 and 64bit dvds when I got vista).
do upgrade to service pack 2 when u get it installed properly.
Are you trying to leave a seperate FAT 32 portion on the hdd for the bios recovery(see manual).
One other thing is a lot of people seem to be having problems with the latest 191.07 nvidia drivers, and on gtx260 cards(blue screens etc).
This may be due to incomplete removal of the old drivers, either way on my machine I eventually had to do a "system restore" to 2 weeks ago, and reinstall Java when i tried them.
At least I havent had to reinstall vista in the 10 months or so since this machine went together.
As for memory recognition by the board my gskill speed and voltage was recognised correctly the timing wasnt and i had to enter that manually.
Before you reinstall vista totally, unless you already have you, can repair it with the installation dvd (first windows os that allowed this I believe)

Using a single stick might work, however I didn't recommend this on principle. There should be no tangible reason why Vista won't install with 4GB, so I feel it best to set the system up so that it operates as it should. Also at some point, the OS will be reinstalled, and it would be a pain to have to remove a stick of RAM to do that. There is the distinct possibility that adding the second stick back after install will just cause a recurrance of issues too.

Never let a piece of hardware dictate what you should do. Always try and make it function the way it should. If all fails, then and only then would I resort to installing the OS with a single stick.

Giving up and installing with 1 stick will probably mean nothing will ever be done to sort an out an issue that obviously exists.

I did my Vista install using a single stick on the same board with the same RAM and had no problem adding another stick once I realized that my real problem was with Slot 3.

But I don't think the original poster has quite the same problem I did, because he can run Memtest for hours with sticks in all four slots. Anytime I put something in three, my Memtest screen very quickly turns red...
