    Default i7 board recommendation needed!

Hi! I am building a pc for a friend and he wants i7. That is totally unknown waters to me, so give me some ideas please. There is almost no money limitation, but I don't want a board with unneeded features either. There will probably be no overlocking happening and if yes, only minimal.

And naturally I forced him into GigaByte :P
Oh and btw, it will be socket 1156 I believe - 1366 is not meant for desktops from what I understood?

Either or , 1156 or 1366 would do the job. Only real difference besides all the technical aspects is 1366 uses triple channel memory and 1156 uses dual channel, and uses less power. No huge diff in performance, but if you go with x58, try out the UD3R rev 1.6
My only thing with 1156 is that it is still new hardware , but does an awesome job. look up both on newegg. Check the i7 920 which would go with a 1366 board on the egg. Crazy reviews. plus u can get it for 199 at MC if u have one locally. You will see some screens posted on here of nutty overclocks done on the i7 860 which is the 1156 board. Thats another thing- be sure you go with the 860 if u must have an 1156 board.

Regarding the ram, 1156 p55-ud3r you would use either 2x2gb or 4x2gb . With the x58-ud3r u can use triple channel 3x2gb , or add a fourth stick for 8gb dual channel. Hope this helps, any questions just ask bro. Good luck!

Sure 1366 is meant for desktops, but is also used in server applications . It is that much of a beast.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the newer 1156 setups are geared for the "desktop/mainstream" market and the higher priced 1366 are "enthusiast/extreme" oriented.
My only reservations with the 1156 is it's currently very new and it will take a while for the bios to fully mature.

You can actually get sweet deal on the "enthusiast/extreme " (cpu+mobo=400) or you could go on the "mainstream" (140+230=370). Depending where you shop of course, but thats an i7 920 + x58 ud3r compared to a i7 860 + p55-ud3r at MC.

Thanks for answers guys. I never cared for i? much as it's still rather expensive compared to say the trusted P45. What confused me was that I read an post somewhere that said something like socket 1366 boards not having PCI-e 2.0 or something - umm, not sure really.

Anyway when prices get down, I will likely build me a new pc based on this platform :)
The processors are expensive as f*** though!!

I think that you're referring to the proposed sata3 implementation that was supposed to be available for the P55 introduction. I read that the acceptable quality yield for the sata3 chip was very low, and couldn't meet the quantity needed by mobo manufacturers. I believe that MSI decided to bundle a sata3 plug in card for their higher end P55 mobos. I've got to wonder if our P45 mobos will be able to support an aftermarket sata3 card in the future.

must admit I don't completely understand what is the bloke talking about, though
