Default WIN7 disk image recommendation needed

I am looking to create a disc image to my hard drive and seen win7 has an option for it. I cant pay the 50 bones for acronis, and would like to know if anybody has used this method successfully. I will be imaging from my SSD to my mech. HDD , loading the image back to the SSD from HDD after performing HDDerase 3.3 . Thanks for any and all answers.

Im not 100% sure if the windows 7 thing is going to do what you need. Im pretty sure I read somewhere that its not an "Image" program like Acronis, I think what I was reading was saying that it just basically copies all your documents and settings and **** like that. Not 100% sure as I say but just google it a bit harder before you go errasing HDD. As for Acronis, I use it to image my HDD and it works fantastic. Infact its one of the easiest programs to use and it actually works. Dont waste your time with Norton Crap.

ok heres another one, i previously had vista installed and bought the 7 upgrade , wanting to do the full clean install by choosing "custom" instead of upgrade and not entering the product key. Then, rebooting with the win dvd and choosing upgrade , let it "upgrade" , then insert the product- the same situation with XP. Well i tried this and it would not allow me to do this- i should have written down why it would not let me, but didnt.

Is this the correct procedure? I have read elsewhere that i would need to do 2 "custom installs " , then insert the product key. I dont see how this would work as i have the upgrade key.

What to do? Is it the same exact procedure as XP to Vista? I've never done it before so im not sure. Someone please throw me a tip?

If upgrading then all you need to do is put the Windows 7 disk in while in Vista and you should be uble to upgrade it like that. Umm when I have more time i will answer your question in better detail.

Try the Windows 7 Forums for info on upgrading to Win7 here.

Windows 7 does have the ability to create an image but only for the system drive. (In other words you can't arbitrarily select which drive / partition to image.)

hmmm, that was cool. After doing the full custom install with the upgrade disk, all i had to do was insert the key normally within windows. Think u was missing the point Nimrod, from what i hear "upgrading" is known to cause problems and a full install would be the better route. Thanks for the helpful replies all, and good looking out WAZZA.

I've been running an in place upgrade for nearly 2 months now without a single issue. Just run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and follow the recommendations. Quite frankly I've been very impressed with how well it worked since I too have always been a firm believer in doing clean installs when changing OS versions.
