    I did yes.
Just tried adding the SATA drive as a 2nd disk, giving my working IDE with the o/s boot priority, and system shuts down as windows starts just as before. Disconnect the sata, and everything is ok again.
    Very strange.

it might be a hard drive incompatability issue, you could try a different brand hd

just bought a samsung SATA hard drive, same happens.
also tried loading windows XP onto the SATA drive, and the reboot loops happen also. does it point to a hardware fault somewhere?

ram is definitely ok (done the diagnostic), and as it runs windows 7 on the IDE drive i'm ruling out faulty ram
SATA hard drive definitely ok (get the same problem with WD & Samsung)
    graphics card seems ok

which means the fault must be with either the cpu or motherboard?

As the o/s works on the IDE hard drive, it pretty much rules out a cpu fault unless I'm mistaken.

To lsdmeasap: can you suggest any bios changes that are worth a try to get this thing working.
One more bit of information: the power supply is a high quality Zalman 600 watt unit, and it isn't powering anything but the main components (case fans disconnected).

sata definitely enabled in bios, checked once more.
yeah very weird this one. can't be sure it's a motherboard fault causing this, but there's not many possibilities left now. a lot of time spent thoroughly checking connections, rebuilding the whole thing numerous times.
seems to be a problem with the sata controller, but can't really rule out a faulty cpu as i've no technical knowledge about that.
almost certainly a hardware fault of sorts, i have to say.
i guess i'll have to return the cpu & motherboard to my supplier and let them sort it out.
