    Default GA EP45-UD3R + q9550 OC

    Hello everyone,

This is my first post on the boards. I've been reading several threads here, including several q9550 OC threads. However, a board member recommended people start their own threads if they needed help/feedback.

Like the title states, I have a EP45-UD3R with a q9550 CPU. I have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus to cool the CPU, and 2x2GB DDR2 1066Mhz RAM from G.Skill. As some of you may know, this motherboard often has compatibility problems w/ G.Skill RAM at 1066Mhz. G.Skill tech support has tried helping me for several days, but they cannot solve the problem.

Since I cannot have my motherboard replaced until winter break, I've been downclocking my RAM and overclocking my CPU trying to make the most of what I currently have. I'd like to make the most out of my RAM without any BSODs.

As of now, I have my CPU at 3.65Ghz with my RAM at 860Mhz at 4-4-4-12 clock speeds. I have almost everything in my BIOS set to auto except for:

    PCI Express Frequency: 100
    Performance Enhance: Standard
    CPU Host Frequency: 430
    Timings: 4-4-4-12
    Command Rate (CR): 2

My computer appears to run fine. I ran Prime95 for 10 minutes with no problems. However, I'm worried about leaving most of my settings on AUTO. I'm also concerned if my RAM Timings are incorrect.

    Here are some screenshots:

I have never used Easy Tune 6, but I posted the screenshot anyway after seeing some members posting theirs in other threads. The Everest screenshot shows my CPU temperatures on idle. Those are my CPU Full Load temperatures after 10 minutes of stress testing on Everest. On Prime95, I stopped the test after it passed Test #5, which took more or less 8 minutes.

    3 Questions:
1.) What settings do I need to manually change from AUTO, if I need to?
2.) What is the fastest my FSB/RAM speeds could achieve without BSODs?
3.) What Clock Timings will my RAM at that speed perform the best? The highest I ever got was 873Mhz at 4-4-4-12.. At 960Mhz with my FSB at 400Mhz I had to reset my CMOS due to looping shutdowns.

Thank you all for taking the time to read all of this. I am no means an experienced overclocker. This week has been my first attempt at overclocking. Everything I have done was either trial and error or read from various articles/threads. All comments, advice, and feedback is appreciated!

    - Andy

P.S. Here is my thread with G.Skill's tech support about my Mobo/RAM issue, if it may somehow help: http://www.gskill.us/forum/showthread.php?t=2493.
Several things I did were not listed on the thread because I also spent hours on G.Skill's Tech Support Line.

Usually it's recomended that CPU Vcore/Termination/PLL, MCH Core, and DRAM Voltage will be set manually.
Set them to their target value in ET6, aside CPU PLL which probably can be set lower, 1.5/1.57v.

For this we'll need your ram specs. A screen captur of MemSet main(click >>) and SPD(click spd) widows will help too.

    What is your default VID?

Use a template from this post or the one below to post your settings when needed.

Please fill your forum signature with your system specs, including a link to ram specs or at least model/part number.

Thank you for the quick reply,

CPU: Yorkfield q9550 Quad Core 2.83Ghz

I'm not sure what you meant by VID. My resolution is at 1440x900 and my VGA is Radeon HD 4870 1GB, if those were what you wanted.

These are my CURRENT settings in my BIOS. I did not change anything that the guide recommended just to show you what I have.

VID the default vcore for the CPU, the value shown as default in BIOS I am assuming 1.1875v.

As for your memory, few things you may try to run it at it's rated DDR-1066.

Set CPU Host Frequency 400 memory multiplier 2.66D, XMP profile1, all timings on auto. Alternatively, XMP disabled and standard timing 5-5-5-15.
Try MCH Core in the range 1.2-1.26v.
If 1.2-1.26v do not work try 1.05-0.95v.
Don't start Windows right away, run memtest86+ for a few passes before you start windows, then run Prime95 large FFT or blend for 6+ hours (recomended 8+ hours), to verify the settings.
As you increase FSB memory speed changes too, so a different multiplier is needed or looser timings.
If you manage to run the above settings, 2.40B multiplier may be possible up to 450FSB.

    Thank you for your reply.

I ran everything as you stated, both with XMP Profile1 and XMP disabled.

XMP Profile1: Ran this with everything set on Auto except for MCH Core and System Memory Multiplier @ 2.66D.
XMP Profile Disabled: Manually changed the clock settings to 5-5-5-15 as you stated, and System Memory Multiplier @ 2.66D.

I ran each setting starting the MCH Core at 1.26V, then dropping it one click at a time until 0.95V (Skipping 1.10V-1.80V). On every test, I had 500 errors within seconds. No setting passed even Test#1 without errors with the exception of XMP Disabled with MCH Core at 1.22V.

On both settings, my computer would shut down periodically at 0.95V before starting up again.

So all tests failed and only one passed test#1 with no errors but still failed?

Try each stick individually, try one in slot #1 and the other in slot #3.
If one fail, replace it with the other to verify if it's the slot or the stick.

You may choose to stay with memory speed/timings as they are now, though they may be limiting with higher FSB.

Correct. After the setting with XMP Disabled and MCH Core at 1.22V passed Test #1 (lasted about 10 seconds total), it encountered 500 errors within 10 seconds in Test #2.

The RAM does not work in my slot #1 and #3. I've been told that my motherboard model has a very common problem with these slots. "Note: Although the motherboard users manual, and generally you should always install memory in slots 1 and 3, this motherboard has a issue where the initial slots are actually 2 and 4. So if you have an issue with slots 1 and 3, try 2 and 4." Source: F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK + GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P / R BIOS settings - GSKILL TECH FORUM

Whenever I put my RAM in slots #1 and #3, my computer will have an infinite loop restart before the Windows Logo even appears.

I'm currently at 3.65Ghz at 860Mhz RAM speed, since I cannot have my motherboard replaced until school ends this semester. What settings will I need to manually change if I wanted to bump it up to 3.8Ghz? Will I also have to bump my clock speeds to 5-5-5-15, or can I still leave it at 4-4-4-12?

    Thank you,
    Andy

There is no way to tell especially since there are issues with the board.
Increase FSB to 448-450 with CPU ratio 8 for 3.6GHz and see what changes need to be made to the memory then increase the ratio to 8.5 and add vcore if nesessary.

Currently Performance Level(Static tRead Value in BIOS, tRD) is very high(15) when you done OC the cpu see how low can you set it(lower values better).

Run at least 8 hours or more of Prime95 blend before declaring settings as stable.
It is also recomended to run IBT max stress level or at least standard, subject to your core temperatures, IBT may produce 10c higher core temps than Prime95.

Gotcha. I will give those settings a try later and tell you how it goes.
