Are you starting from optimized? If you are then fine, if not please start with those now.

Then see if these changes help any, if they do then go ahead and undo the changes one by one until you find the cause

I set everything as you suggested, booted up my flight sim (Il-2 1946) and I'm still getting "hitches". It nearly always seems to happen when it needs to produce sound of one sort or another. The whole machine just freezes - the screen, sound etc, - sometimes you can hear a sort of a "shunk" noise as the hard drive is accessed then the game starts again and the whole thing carries on until it need another specific sound (usually radio chatter from AI wingmen). It just doesn't seem to load all the sounds in at the start and needs to pull them off disk for some strange reason.

This happens in nearly all other games as far as I can see, Rise of Flight does the exact same thing, except that one will store up the lost frames and then fire them out after the hitch/pause like a buzzsaw. World of Warcraft will hitch in exactly the same way, nearly always to do with new sounds being loaded in.

I even swapped out the CPU today and put an older core 2 duo chip in and it was no different. Thats everything swapped out except the DVD player and the PSU. Nothing has made a difference.

I've tried a brand new install of the OS (Windows 7) with a different sata drive and its exactly the same. This machine has been doing this in 4 different Operating Systems now - XP, Vista 32, Vista 64 and now Windows 7.

    Totally fed up now.

Thanks for the help anyway, I'm just at a loss as to what to do now.

Hmm, are you using onoard sound or a sound card? Just wondering since you seem to narrow it down to being related to sound.

Either way, if you are using onboard or a card can you disable or remove it if it is a card and test again without the sound. If you are using onboard go into the BIOS and disable Azalia and see if it still happens.

As for if it is not sound. Maybe this is a very graphical scene and only appears to be sound related? Do you have a smaller monitor that your 46" to test with to see if this is the issue or part of it?

X-Fi Fatality Champion Platinum something or other. I've tried it without the card, but problem is still there. I didn't uninstall the drivers though, so I suppose I could try that.

I can try the pc on my work monitor and see of its any different, but I use the 46 in TV as my monitor and I'm stuck with it really.

Well I was just asking for testing purposes is all, on the monitor.

Ya, please do uninstall the sound card and drivers for a test as well.

I understand, I didn't mean to come across all defensive :)

Ok, this is weird. I just disabled the soundcard and the ATI high definition sound driver (something to do with the video card I think), then ran Il-2 1946 and...... no hitches. Now I physically removed the sound card the other day and it didn't make a blind bit of difference. Odd.

I think the next plan is to uninstall the X-Fi drivers, remove the card and then set up the onboard sound and see if it works ok.

It's cool, I didn't think anything like that in your post. Just wanted to let you know what I meant.

Hmm, from your comment it could be that the ATI Driver is conlicting with the X-FI driver. Try uninstalling CCC/ATI Fully and then reboot and reinstall but this time choose custom install and uncheck (or disable) the ATI HDMI sound driver while you are installing.

If that does not help, then ya go ahead and try a few tests without the card. One with no sound enabled, and another with the onboard. You will need to go into the BIOS and enable Azalia to use the onboard sound. Just a heads up.

I do recommend you also use the latest RealTek drivers direct from the source >>

    Good luck with the testing!

I seem to remember back in the old days, if the sound card was in a particular PCI slot, then problems could occur. I'm now wondering if it might be that using the bottom PCI slot for the sound card might be the problem....

On the ATI front, I've not got CCC installed, Im using ATI Tray Tools (lots of fiddling with DSEO to verify the ATT drivers etc.), but it seems less clunky than CCC.
