    Default EP45-DS3L Memory Problems

Hi all, I'm having problems with my EP45-DS3L based system. The main spec is

    EP45-DS3L motherboard
    Corsair 650W PSU
    2 x Corsair CM2X2048-6400C4DHX
    Intel Core 2 Duo 8400
    Ati Radeon 4870x2
    1 x 160 GB Sata boot drive
    1 x 160 GB Sata
    1 x 500 gb Sata 2 drive
    DVD/RW
    X-Fi Fatality Champion soundcard

Whats been happening is brief pauses in games, about every 30-60seconds I get a 1-2 second "hitch" where the screen freezes but the game continues to run. The PC then "catches up" until it hitches again.

So, I decided to try to find out what is causing it. Usually, when the hitch happens I can hear what sounds like the hard drive starting up, a sort of metallic "whip/clunk" noise. So I started there, disconnected my 3 hard drives, put a new 250 GB Sata 2 disk in and set up Windows 7 again. Problem is still there. I then swapped out the graphics card for my old (but working) Radeon X800 Pro, that didn't fix it either. I then took the 4 1GB corsair memory sticks out of my work PC (CM2X1024-6400C4) and put them in my problem PC. PC won't boot. Swapped memory back and checked BIOS is set to SPD for memory, it is, then tried the 4 sticks again. No joy. Then I took the 2 sticks out of the red banks and the PC boots.

That is as far as I have got, and so I thought I'd ask you guys for some advice. Is the motherboard faulty?

are you using easytune with graphics card overclocked in it? in a loaded profile? and also ati catalyst? ifso choose not to load saved profile at start up in easytune, and to test your ram plug one stick into each slot read manual to see what colour coded slots your supposed to use it should boot with each stick and each slot

Load optimized defaults if you have not done it yet, and make changes you have made before such as disk mode/priority etc.
For large/high speed memory configurations additional MCH Core is usually needed.

With optimized defaults loaded set Performance Enhance to standard and disable XMP, this should set ram to DDR-800 5-5-5-15/18 timings, if you want the low latency timings set XMP to profile1(or profile2 whichever you have there).
DRAM Voltage should be set to 1.9v with XMP disabled and 2.1v with XMP enabled, check PC Health Status after saving and rebooting.
Try MCH Core in the range 1.2-1.24v, start low increase only if needed.

I take it this is your memory, and the other are 2 as the link in my sig.
Please add the link to your forum signature with all other system specs.

Let us know how it goes.

Many thanks for the swift replies.

    Wazza300:

    and also ati catalyst? No

Nothing is overclocked, tweaked etc.. Its all bog-standard settings.

I'll test the slots with the 2GB sticks that are in it.

    Chike:

I'll try the optimised defaults and set everything as you suggest.

My work PC is a EP35-DS3P based machine and I have had zero problems with it, never had to tweak anything and all games play really smoothly. This is why I'm suspicious of the EP45 board in the other PC.

The problems might not be memory problems after all, could be a device driver or some conflict, we'll know better after you try those changes.

If it helps to diagnose, I've had this same problem on this PC with 4 different OS installs, XP, Vista 32, Vista 64 and now Windows 7 64-Bit.

Ok I've loaded optimized defaults, set Performance Enhance to standard and disabled XMP.

DRAM Voltage is set to 1.9v and MCH Core is 1.2v.

Hitching is still present in games.

I've found in the past that most games will be ok for 5 minutes or so, no hitching at all, then it will just start.

Try 1.22 and 1.24v MCH Core (if you have the options),DRAM Voltage 2.0-2.1v.

Can you post a screen capture of MemSet main<click >>) window?
MemSet can be downloaded from http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/late...30/#post284762

Did all different OS installs had the X-Fi card installed?
Not sure but I think I've seen post about problems with this card around.

What is the BIOS vers installed on the board?

Ok, I'll try to do the memset thing later.

All OS installs had the X-Fi card, but it was also previously in my EP35-DS3P rig and I had no stutters/pauses/hitching with that PC at all. I think we are down to motherboard or processor; my gut feel is motherboard. It was just odd that I couldn't use all 4 banks with the EP45 board and yet the EP35 board worked straight away with 4 banks occupied, no tinkering required.

    I'll check BIOS later.
