    Default 965BE Doesn't boot :(

I went to the store to get a 955BE, but they were out so I got the 965BE. I was sure my Mobo supported it, but when I got home and checked the website the 955 was the highest they supported. I have the ga-ma78gm-us2h. Is there anything I can do? Should it boot and just say it is a 955? This 965 is the 125W version. Should I return the CPU?

Sometimes they will boot and just give CPU Error, other times they may not boot at all.

What I suggest you do is contact Gigabyte support and see if they will send you a beta BIOS >>
    GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Technical Service Zone

Do you have an older CPU so you can update to BIOS F8 (Rev. 1.0 Boards) or BIOS FE (Rev. 2.0 Boards) and see if that has added support or not?

I can ask about this for you later this week, please PM and remind me Sunday night and I will ask and see if I can get you a beta any quicker than the normal channels may provide

965 is supported officially in the Revision 2.0 boards, I take it you have Rev 1.0?
    GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - CPU Support List - GA-MA78GM-US2H (rev. 2.0)

If you do have 2.0 all you need to do is borrow an older CPU so you can flash the BIOS to BIOS FE

Thank you for the reply. I am flashed all the way up to F8 (I have rev1.0), can I flash the rev2.0 FE or will that not work?

Let me understand what you are asking here you have a BIOS version that is a beta? You want to know if you can flash a BETA version yes you can but some have issues(maybe 1%). Now if you are trying to flash from a different BIOS revision of your board that will not work as they most likely will be incompatible. If you try you will get a error message while trying to flash I think.
EDIT I see what L has recommended that you use a compatible CPU (older CPU)that will allow you to try to flash up to current BIOS version. The most current version will then most likely support your new CPU(But I could be wrong as I have not checked Gigabyt website.
    anything else?

No, he's asking if he can flash a version 1 board with a version 2 BIOS.

No, this isn't possible. For a start the flasher/QFlash won't let you do it. Second, if you use a program to force the flash then you'll probably brick your board. If the v1 and v2 were able to use the same BIOS file then there would only be one version rather than a version per revision.

No, you cannot flash FE into your board, it is a different revision and will NOT work, and as said above the flash will fail and even if it did not it could possibly brick your board so do not attempt it.

I am asking right now about a beta BIOS for you with added CPU support, I will let you know what I hear back.

    Please wait, thanks!

I spoke with Gigabyte and they said this board (Revision 1.0) supports the 965(C3, 125W) CPU from BIOS F3 and an onward. They will update the CPU Support list to include this info.

So you will need to update the BIOS with another CPU is all, as it sounds like it may be F1 or F2 in it now.

Can you borrow a older AMD to flash with?

My original try was with F3, when I first bought the CPU. This is an upgrade from my Phenom 9600BE. This didn't boot up, I just got really long beeps from the Mobo speaker. I booted back up with the 9600BE and upgraded from Bios F3 to F8, and this didn't change anything when I tried again with the 965BE. I took the 965 back to the store in an attempt to get a 955BE, but they still didn't have any, so I went ahead and just got cash back..

Ahh well at least you got your money back, often that would not happen after you open a CPU.

Sounds to me like the CPU may actually have been faulty.
