Default MA785GM-US2H trying to load Windows 7 64-bit

Hi....I have a home-built PC with this MB on it and it's been running Vista 32-bit. I bought Windows 7 and was able to upgrade to 32-bit through Vista OK.

I decided that I'm going to go through the trouble of making the transition to 64-bit right away though. Naturally Windows 7 32-bit is telling me that 32 and 64 aren't compatiable, and I will need to boot from the CD to install Windows. I'm trying that--I'm positive that I have the disc in the drive and I have my DVD drive listed with first boot priority (I've checked it like 10 times), but it keeps loading straight into Windows 7 anyway. Is there something that I'm missing?

I should probably mention that this is the upgrade package that I'm using to install Windows 7.

I'm trying to do the clean install....that's where I'm having trouble, while I'm trying to boot from the CD drive. It won't let me install from within Windows, because it's saying that the 64 bit isn't compatiable with 32 (which is what I currently have). It says to reboot Windows through the installation disc if I want to go ahead with the install....then I can't boot from the DVD like I need to.

I know that my DVD drive works--I had no trouble upgrading from 32-bit Vista to 32-bit Windows 7, but I was able to do that straight through Vista because I was going like-to-like with 32-bit to 32-bit.

you have to format your hd first then, then load the cd and boot from it...save all your important files to dvd first or use a second hd if you have one, then format (wipe) hd then do clean install

Are you sure that's true that I need to format first? I have the upgrade disc, so I'm wondering if that will even run if I have a formatted drive with no OS on it.

Another reason I'm on here and considering this to be a MB/BIOS issue rather than on a Windows forum is because I have another computer with 32-bit Windows 7 on it, and I'm able to boot to the DVD just fine. Gives me the same error from within Windows, but I can boot from the DVD drive OK.

Different setup completely on the other computer....

well if your os is 32 bit like you say and it wont let you upgrade it with 64 bit, then you will need to do a clean install, unless you bought the upgrade disc for a 64 bit os...its a pity you dont have a spare hd then you could try it...thats why its booting into windows because it still ahs an os on it and its not a blank hard drive

I would think when your installing windows 7 you'll be at a point where you can delete/create partitions. Delete the partition, cerate the partition and format. Or you could wipe the drive from dos with a program called dban-beta just goggle it. Of course this would take up to 3 hours depending on your drive size. I do feel like you'll need to do a clean install since going from 32 bit to 64 bit.

I do appreciate the input....but maybe I just haven't been explaining myself very well. At this point the clean install is exactly what I'm trying to do--and I've accepted that fact.

I went into my BIOS and tried to set my DVD drive to be # 1 in boot order so it would boot directly from the Windows installation disc. On a different computer, this works just fine and it goes directly to the Windows 7 installation setup screens.

On the computer with this Gigabyte MB in it though, it keeps loading straight into Windows as though the installation disc/boot from DVD setting hadn't happened. It seems that there must be some setting that I'm overlooking in the BIOS.....

Oh ok missread I guess.. You could try when booting up hitting F12 or is it F8 for the boot menue and selecting CD Rom. But it should boot from the cd anyway as you know. Do you get the press any key to boot from cd? Oh and if you have more than 1 cd rom I would put the disk in the other one and I bet it will boot.
