Checked in BIOS. The settings were indeed set to Auto.

Set it up directly from there as specified and again tried Dawn of War. Crashed twice in this time period. Both times suddenly cutting to a black screen. Audio was still playing, but the machine had totally locked up.

I had to restart the machine.

On some system configurations changing desktop resolution may causes the OS
to stop responding when real-time protection is enabled in Microsoft Security
Essentials <-- from amd catalyst release notes, make sure you set the 3d refresh rate in catalyst control centre to same as desktop maybe it will solve it click display options in ccc and youll see it,try disabling real time protection in ms essentials if you can find it

theres alot of folks having problems with this card if you look on the net,i think its just a case of new hardware and having to wait till either a bios update or new ati drivers come out to fix it

I do have some time left to return parts.
Should I just wait for an update?

I would wait until the next Catalyst release in early/mid December (Catalyst 9.12). 9.11 was by all accounts a bit of a rush job in the case of the new 57xx cards. ATI had to move quickly simply to get "any" driver support they could in an official release so that they didn't look like fools. This often happens when new cards are released.

One thing I would do is run GPU-Z in the background while playing. leave it on the Sensors tab and make sure "Continue to update while in the background" is checked. Using the little arrows within the titles of the various sensors will let you choose to display the max temp that component reached. Pay particular attention to GPU Temp, MEMIO and if present, anything labeled "VDDC" (voltage regulators/mosfets). Anything up to around 75c-80c should certainly be stable. More than that and temps may possibly be the problem. Only solution to that is to manually set a higher fan speed. The 57xx/58xx have been tuned for quietness as a priority.

A seperate fan blowing onto the back of the card, near the end (toward the front of the case, opposite end to the back plate) is also very effective if hot voltage regulators are the problem.
