I think I'll wait for this new CCC update and see how that changes things.

Thank you for all your help folks.

I have had a similar problem with Win 7 x64 (Display driver has stopped responding.....................) Using sapphire 5770. Games would crash on a regular basis. I removed 1 of 2 ram modules and the machine now runs everything perfectly(Two day's going strong). Could this be ram timings incorrect? or voltage needs tweaking?? I would like to go back to 4gb at some point. Previously all components worked perfectly on XP.
    Thanks.

That does certainly sound like a RAM HW settings issue, however it could also be that the display driver is somehow fouling up when addressing beyond 2GB.

Worth a go at slightly loosening advanced timings, making sure you are running around 1.66VDIMM (if the module is rated 1.65V and you're running at the modules stock speeds) and that various voltages (QPI/VTT etc) are high enough. Note that the various Uncore voltages(basically anything but the VCore, Uncore= everything on die that isn't the C|PU) are highenough. If running RAM faster than 1333 (i5's max official supported speed) you will in most cases need to raise voltages slightly.

Hey another ATI sufferer, you have my sympathies, I have the 5870 and have loads of problems of late aswell, mostly totally random vertical lines (blue, brown, grey). I have a stable overl**** (as far as linx/prime95/furmark tell me) so I am holding back to see what these new drivers bring apart from that I have also heard that disabling the HDMI driver has helped some (not many) and also disabling ATI Overdrive. If that doesnt work I am going to drop my OC to bang on 4Ghz or slightly under. Gonna try 10 passes of memtest86+ tonight just to be sure RAM is ok, I'm sure it is, but my readings on this have seen a few posts saying "Ihad the vertical lines problems and found my ram was going bad, replaced no more problems"! Dont worry though I see you got some great players looking after you ; LSD etc, if your going to get sorted, it will be here by these guys!!!

Crimson, are you using x64 OS?

Give us your full specs, and current settings and we can advise back on optimal settings so you can use all your memory

IMHO, whenever you have a problem., always start from stock settings (not OC'd) and see if it still exists.

Also the new 5800 series vid cards have there autofan tuned to being quiet not actually keeping your GPU coo,l when you get into a graphics demanding game, and if your running eyefinity your GPU runs even hotter yet.

Try using CCC and enable overdrive so you can amnually set the fan speed, 45% to 55% is good for gaming, again all depends on your ambient temp as well, so it may even be higher.

You can also setup profiles with hotkeys for different fan speeds.

Definitely take off any overclock if problems like this happen, I agree.

I've actually found the 58xx series to be much much cooler than the 48xx was. Very regularly on 4870 builds I've done I see the stock cooler struggle noisily to keep the GPU below 80-85c when loaded but with the 58xxx that drops to 65-75c depending on the game and with a quieter fan profile.

I know what you mean about heat, and ofc the lower the better imo, anything you can do to keep things cooler helps product life time and increases OC potential. There should however be no kind of erroring or throttling on a stock card as long as temps stay under 80c maybe a bit more. The GPU's themselves don't start to throttle until well over 100c, 107c I believe. You could be right though if the RAM or VRM's are getting too hot. These tend to heat up a lot, and the VRM's especially can cause BSOD's if they get too hot. Although they're rated up to 127c the comfort zone is anything below 90c. I find that the disadvantage of a "cover all" heatsink like the stock ATI is that one hot component be it GPU, RAM or VRMs can heat up everything else in a synergistic way.

I would definitely follow the advice in my previous thread with regards to monitoring the temps using GPU-Z then balancing fan speed to keep everything in a good temp range using no more fan speed than what is needed, ie completely optimal.

One thing I would do is run GPU-Z in the background while playing. leave it on the Sensors tab and make sure "Continue to update while in the background" is checked. Using the little arrows within the titles of the various sensors will let you choose to display the max temp that component reached. Pay particular attention to GPU Temp, MEMIO and if present, anything labeled "VDDC" (voltage regulators/mosfets). Anything up to around 75c-80c should certainly be stable. More than that and temps may possibly be the problem. Only solution to that is to manually set a higher fan speed. The 57xx/58xx have been tuned for quietness as a priority.

    Hi folks.

It has been a while since I have been able to post here, so let me start by thanking everyone who has left advice and suggestions.

Since the last time I replied, I have installed Bios version 4a and the latest ATI driver updates and I'm afraid to say my problems remain much the same. I have tried many of the solutions as documented in this thread to the best of my abilities and nothing has worked.

Strange thing is, only games crash. And amongst those it seems to be more recent titles (Fallout 3, Street Fighter 4, Dawn of War 2, Last Remenant). Older titles such as Bioshock, FEAR and the Orange Box seem to run with no problems. Worth noting Left 4 Dead 2 black screened, but I was able to tab back to desktop, receive the message that the display driver had stopped responding but recovered and then tab back to the game and continue playing.

Anyway, the reason I post this is that I've pretty much had enough of this situation and was considering replacing parts. I would like some advice on this matter, but I suspect the ATI Card is the best bet.

Also if you have any more ideas for possible solutions please do not hesitate to post them here. As always I am most grateful for your help.
