    Default EP-45 Extreme + Q9650 4GHz

Hi all, been trying to get 4ghz on this new cpu for a few days now. Its my first quad core and the settings needed to overclock them seem completly different to dual cores, so i'm a bit clueless as to how I go about it. I tried applying the same settings I used to achive 4.2ghz on my old E8500 and strangely enough everything seemed fine. Prime95 was fine for a few hours (should of done longer i know) and had 3 instances of folding@home cpu + 1 gpu running for 2 days. It all seemed good then it just crashed and refused to boot.

    The settings I tried were:

    1.40 vcore in bios
    1.34 cpu term
    1.60 cpu pll
    0.74 mch ref

those were fine for my dual core.

Various posts on the net suggest using around 1.20 cpu term, 1.50 cpu pll and 0.8xx mch ref. But clearly i'm doing something very wrong cos it isnt working for me at all. Either windows will boot but fails in prime or windows wont boot.

I have a feeling its something to do with the mch ref values but I don't know a good value to start at. So any pointers would be appreciated

You shouldn't need so much vcore. First of all, use one of the templates and post your settings. There may be a bigger issue besides just voltages.

With quads, focus more on the ram/dram settings. I suggest stepping up your mch ref and mch/dram ref one step up each (or down) from stock. It took my from 5hrs stable to 24hr stability.

I dont know the extreme board .. and the 9650 well ,its not the same value for $ as 9550, but should go a bit faster.
Check posts by the forum member Conners his cpu is close to yours,
Your board is supposed to be better for clocking
    but who knows.
Check all his bios setting posts, they shouldnt be that much different to yours.
On the ref voltages enter in manually whatever is the nominal value on the left, instead of auto, after you load optimised defaults.

For cpu host frequencyof 475 -490(up to 1960 fsb) you shouldnt need more than 1.4 cpu core regardless of multiplier
there is no mention of your memory type/voltage or mch voltage etc.. but check Conners posts, there should be a lot of info there

Post your complete bios temp as another setting might be out of wack.

Assuming you are using 9x450 to get 4Ghz try
1.35 vcore (still higher then needed but just to be sure) with llc on
    1.28 cpu term
    1.5-1.57 cpu Pll
defualt 0.76 cpu ref at 1.2 cpu term
Maybe one click up on nb ref from 1.2 cpu term
1.24-1.28 nb vcore depending on amount of ram installed.

I dont know your board but thats what my cpu board and ram need for 4ghz Think mine ill do it at 1.3125-1.3375 vcore.

Also did you clear the bios via jumper or at least load optimized defaults after swapping cpus. If not I would do so then reapply the settings.

    thanks for the replys.

Managed to get into windows and get prime running without it crashing as soon as it starts.

Atm i'm using 1.328 vcore (1.312 under load), 1.28 cpu term, 1.56 cpu pll.

I'm using 4x2gb 1066 ram. I cant increase mch voltage any higher than the default 1.20, if I do the system wont even post.

according to et6 it have 1.4v 1.328 at idle and 1.312 at load. It could be your board needs that amount but still is a lot. what VID is your chip mine is 1.225. I am test now with new bios f10i for my board at 9x475 at

Vcore 1.35626 1.312 idle and load.
    Cpu Term 1.28
    Cpu PLL 1.57
    MCH core 1.24
    Cpu ref 0.76
    Mch Ref 0.800

Its been a couple days since i messed with it i think i uped the vcore since last test that failed small fft's at 3 hrs.

I need to set the vcore that high in the bios because of the high vdroop this board has. Still don't think its high enough either, getting errors in prime

    VID is 1.28 I think

Q9550's and Q9650's are both (IME) binned pretty closely. You do get good and bad in both ofc, but the only factor on OC really will be if your board is "Man enough" to carry the extra FSB the Q9550 needs in matching a Q9650's OC.

@Cyclo: Vdroop isn't the problem, you have high VDrop. VDrop = difference between BIOS set VCore and idle VCore. Your VDroop (difference between idle and load Vcore) is actually quite low. Do you have a LLC option in the BIOS? If so tur it on and try lowering VCore in bios step by step to see if it will go lower.

Pretty sure this board doesnt have an llc option, i've never seen it anyway

    vcore was 1.33 under load

Do I really need more vcore or is there some other setting out there that I have no idea about that I can try?

If you say your VID is 1.28V, then more than likely yes, you will need more if it's only 1.312 at load.

I'd have a look near voltage options. If a so called "Extreme" board doesn't have LLC, then personally I'd want a refund.
