    No you don't. DDR3 is exactly the same as DDR and DDR2 with respect to DDR rating and actual clock speed. The actual clock speed is HALF the DDR rating, ie the clock speed DOUBLED is the DDR rating, so DDR1600 RAM is running at 800MHz true clock frequency.

    The difference between DDR, DDR2 and DDR3 is that DDR2 transfers two bits per pin, double that of DDR and DDR3 can transmit 3 bits per pin. This has nothing to do with clo0ck speeds and the end user need not be concerned about it.

    Hi, I'm also new to overclocking as un4seendeathz is and my settings are as follows:


    • Ex58-UD4P
    • i7 975 3.33GHz
    • 12GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600
    • NVIDIA GTX 295

    I've been modifying the clock ratio and BCLK but can't seem to replicate anything similar to:

    CPU-Z Validator 3.1
    CPU-Z Validator 3.1
    or let alone this:
    CPU-Z Validator 3.1

    Even if I could get it to boot into windows at ~4GHz, it doesn't stand the prime95 test for more than 2 seconds.

    I was checking out the settings based on Lsdmeasap's response to un4seendeathz request (included below) and am wondering what changes are needed below to cater to the i7 975 / different ram I have:

    Settings suggested by Lsdmeasap for i7 920 for overclocking to 4GHz below but would like one for i7 975 for >4GHz if possible (stable):

    its harder to overclock with 12gb of ram,what cpu voltage and qpi voltages are you using? and what clock are you at 3.3ghz? also what timings and voltages are your ram?
