    Default Another Q8200, EP45-UD3P Overclock in need of Expert Eyes

    Absolutely superb forums... I've learned a lot already just from reading through the gems but what I've learned most is that I know nothing at all ;)

    CPU = Core2Quad Q8200 2.33GHz (BIOS info says processor clock is 333MHz) Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops
    Motherboard = GA-EP45-UD3P
    BIOS Version = FB
    Ram = 4x2GB Kingston HyperX T1 Series 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
    Newegg.com - Kingston HyperX T1 Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model KHX8500D2T1K2/4G - Desktop Memory

    I had a stable system (running 5 hours of Prime95 with no errors) using information found in these forums (http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/help...-please-28995/) but I had to ratchet down some choices (see below for current settings).... the cores all run at 58-60Ί under 100% load per core so, at least based on heat, it seems like this puppy can push harder! I've got Arctic Silver thermal compound and an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Fan on the processor.

    I'm guessing I don't have the memory right... runs okay when pushed to a memory frequency of 850Mhz but don't know how to get it closer to 1066Mhz assuming that's what the machine would like in order to run stably at a higher FSB.

    Hello giganate, welcome to gigabyte forums. Have you tried flashing to the latest bios? There is a guide that is sticked at the top of the forums which i found to be extremely helpful.

    p45 ud3p 1.6 fb stable but fd fails or is it just my ocz incompatibility?!? This guy has problems uniquely similar to mine. I'm starting to think this ocz brand is just not that great. JR P45 driving me crazy!

    @R_Hollandtekk

    Thanks for the welcome and prompt response R_Hollandtekk!

    I'm laughing because I just went to the link in your signature for the thread of your board, and it looks like five pages of how you couldn't get the updated BIOS (FD) to work with your Overclock but you had been running stably on FB (which is what I've got) ... by the end, people are asking you why you want to upgrade your BIOS when FB is working so well for you ;)

    Hahaha, so I don't think I'm going to update my BIOS just yet.
    You trying to sabotage me with FD or something ;) break my stable overclock?
    LOL

    The one rule of tech I obey always: never update ANYthing unless you really need to.

    The easiest thing to do is to consider your memory as 1000 mhz memory for now,if you want to get max cpu speed.
    You can get 3.5ghz stable but 3.43(490cpu host) or 3.4 is a lot easier.

    The figures in my sig work ok for me.actually I think I have 1.3625V entered in bios for Cpu core right now because I like to get say 495 cpu host frequency stable then back off the speed.

    They may not work for you because of the different memory.
    My full bios settings are in some post i made last month.Imtoo lazy/too short on time to go looking for it,but feel free

    For 500 cpuhost frequency i need 2.22V for memory like over .01V just for an extra 20mhz memory speed.
    Around 3.4 ghz cpu should be easily obtainable,980 mhz mem speed.

    If you want to get your memory running at or close to its rated speed you will need a cpu host frequency down around 450-460.

    nb the temperatures in my sig are from when I was running 3.5Ghz cpu speed in the summer .

    You would need to change your FSB to run 1066 really.

    And I do suggest you update to the latest BIOS, as this may be what is causing your issues. His thread about FD issues I think was caused by the ram he is using. You can always flash back if it does not help or makes things worse for you, but this is the first thing users should do when having issues.

    Thanks much!

    I will update the BIOS ... I don't know where FB falls in the scheme of things but from your suggestions, it sounds like it's not where I need to be?

    Memory speed doesn't matter tremendously to me because I don't know what the real-life impact would be and, from the sound of it, adjusting timings/latency can give better performance than Mhz... but since I don't know how to adjust these things optimally, I was going for general processing power first and just trying to drag my memory along with the plan!

    So it sounds like I need to update my BIOS and mimic Kick ;)

    Thanks everybody, I think I was mostly concerned that I needed to make some crucial adjustments to my basic OC but it sounds like I've got some other legwork to do first.

    thanks

    [after this post I talked myself back into flashing and just did so successfully... ran optimized defaults...rebooted...am now playing with settings...will report]

    This is a revision 1.6 board btw...so you're telling me that the BIOS that came out 2 weeks ago (FD) for this board is potentially vastly superior to the BIOS that came out in May (FB)? (These are the only ones available on the site, besides FA)

    You guys have been doing this for years and have probably had incredibly stable fast-running machines on far lesser BIOSes ;)

    Hate flashing stuff... done it a million times with a million devices (although haven't had to flash a mobo in awhile) and obviously you've written a terrific guide.... I just figure I must have amazing timing if the one BIOS (FD) that will unlock the potential of this board were just invented and released a mere two weeks ago.

    I guess the trade-off for high speed is early adoption but man, two weeks is very little time to test such a thing in the wild.

    So I think I've talked myself out of it. I mean, is FD really the answer? I get you though... we need to eliminate all variables and we won't know if the new BIOS would make this work easily without trying.

    I'm going to keep looking for Kick's settings (if I find them, I will post them here so you can hand them out to people ;) although not looking too promising... Kick has a lot of posts too!)

    Thanks everybody, time to get back to it!

    Immediate Kernel Panics (OSX) on first round using combination of Kick signature settings and what I originally had...no worries, more experimentation required!

    Holy Moly Macaroni.

    I was just about to throw in the towel on this (I'm in over my head, out of my league, and running out of time to figure this out ;) but found Kick's post:
    http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/help...77/#post332803

    This enabled me to boot without a Kernel Panic!

    Alas, failed Prime95 pretty early in ... I did note that my machine is listing the memory at 667 now!

    Is it a mistake to have 8 gigs of memory in here... I wonder if this is holding me back. Would be better to have 4 gigs and faster o.c. than 8 gigs and slower? n00b question I imagine ;)

    Well, I appreciate all the help ... the update to FD had a good impact just in how my drives are showing up when they weren't posting before... so that's nice ;

    .....

    OK, I tried Kick's settings with a lower host frequency (3.33) and Prime95 lasted an hour before failing!

    .....
    Now going to go down to 7x460 (3.22) and lower some of the voltages and call it a day (or night ;)
